DTE versus DCE Most devices, except modems, are Data Terminal Equipment (DTE) devices. Modems are Data Communication Equipment (DCE) devices. Comtrol ports are configured as DTE. How you build a cable depends on which device your are connecting to (DTE or DCE). -
