December 2004 Edition Safety Introduction This chapter presents the safety requirements that must be complied with without fail when using the computer-controlled inert gas double wave automatic soldering machine (called the “Automatic soldering machine” in the following). For all persons work on and with the automatic soldering machine, it is mandatory to read and understand the chapters that are relevant for their activity.
  • Page 16: Usage Conformant With Intended Purpose

December 2004 Edition Safety 2.1.2 Usage Conformant with Intended Purpose The automatic soldering machine is intended for the automatic, transport-bound soldering of electronic printed circuit boards in an inert gas atmosphere. The type designations CIG 300/400/500 compact relate to different soldering widths and transporting options for the printed circuit boards with the corresponding dimensions and weight of the automatic soldering machine (see Chapter 1 Type Designation).
  • Page 17: Warning Notices And Symbols

December 2004 Edition Safety Warning Notices and Symbols Generally, there are concomitant dangers with the use of technical products. Dangers that could not be eliminated either by design-related measures or by protective devices are called residual dangers. Although the automatic soldering machine distinguishes itself by a high quality and safety standards, and although it has been built according to the state-of-the-art and the recog- nized technical rules, injury or damage to property cannot be completely ruled out in case of operating errors, improper use or misuse, owing to existing residual dangers.

December 2004 Edition Safety Principles of Safety 2.3.1 Influence on Other Safety Concepts The safety concept of the automatic soldering machine described here is an autonomous one. Other upstream and downstream machines, auxiliary equipment (mandatory accesso- ries in the supply schedule like: starting modules, extension modules, motor modules, height adjustment modules, converters, lifts, etc.) are not affected by it.
  • Page 21: Safety Measures, Organizational

December 2004 Edition Safety 2.3.4 Safety Measures, Organizational Apart from the strict compliance with the minimum requirements, which have to be speci- fied for safe working at and with the plant (see chapter 2.1.2), no further measures are re- quired. 2.3.5 Safety Elements and Functions, Emergency Stop etc.
  • Page 22: General Safety Rules

Modifications to the machine in the sense of add-on equipment and renovations which can affect safety in any way are only permitted after previous discussion with and written ap- proval from EPM Handels AG. This also applies to the installation of checking, supply and transfer systems from external suppliers.
  • Page 23: Responsibilities

Should any (residual) dangers and risks manifest themselves during operation, which are not described in this operating manual, it is obligatory for the operator to immediately report them to EPM Handels AG. The “responsibilities of the operator” also apply to the operating personnel, in as much as they must immediately report to their superiors about any defects that cause a situation where the safety is no longer guaranteed.

  • Page 31: Flux System

    • Chemicals for sufficient wetting of the metallic surfaces are added to the flux. The epm CIG series is fitted with an atomizer fluxer as a standard feature. The epm-flux station, thanks to its stand-by connection, is extremely economical with reference to the maintenance, flux materials and energy consumption.
  • Page 32: Atomizer Fluxer

Structure and Function 3.3.1 Atomizer Fluxer The epm atomizer fluxer is operated by means of an external air supply. The flux is con- veyed directly from the supplied container through a hose pump into the system. Thus, through the dual-medium nozzle (air + flux), an optimum flux film is coated, which is repro- ducible at any time.
  • Page 33: Fluxer Pump

September 2007 Edition Structure and Function 3.3.1.1 Fluxer Pump The fluxer pump is driven by a completely closed DC-motor with continuous lubrication. This is fitted with long-life carbon brushes and runs extremely silently. The drive system automatically compensates load changes. The new controller system guarantees a reliable, exact speed regulation with high stability.
  • Page 34: Flow Meter

September 2007 Edition Structure and Function 3.3.1.2 Flow Meter The flow quantity of the flux can be read on the flow meter. Fig. 3-8. Flow 3.3.1.3 Flow Monitoring In the case of the flow meter, the limiting value for the desired quantity of the flux can be set.
  • Page 35: Level Monitoring

September 2007 Edition Structure and Function 3.3.1.4 Level Monitoring The capacitive level probe is located directly in the original barrel of the flux and monitors the level of the flux. Upon disconnecting the contact between the probe and the flux, a sig- nal is passed via the signal amplifier to the controller, which thereupon triggers an error message and an alarm.
  • Page 36: Drying And Preheating System

Drying and Preheating System 3.4.1 IR-Preheater The tried-and-tested epm-infrared drying and preheating system guarantees optimum acti- vation of the flux. The solvent (isopropanol, water, etc.) evaporates from the flux. The high temperature on the solder side of the PCBs (about 110°C) activates the chemically active substances (activators).
  • Page 37: Soldering System

The CIG compact automatic soldering machine is fitted with two standard waves, the epm hollow wave and the epm full wave. Both the solder waves are located in the same solder- ing crucible. This ensures that both the waves have the same solder temperature. Each of the two solder waves has its own pump system.
  • Page 38: Wave Former

The soldering in the hollow wave causes a partial reduction of the flux. However, the rest is still active enough to guarantee the soldering in the full wave. The height of the epm hollow wave can be regulated independently of the full wave: •...
  • Page 39: Full Wave (Second Wave)

3.5.2.2 Full Wave (Second Wave) The following epm full wave with laminar flow components ensures the flowing off of excess solder and causes a concave shape of the solder groove (meniscus), which is particularly important in the case of SMD components. The flat, extremely quiet and asymmetrical epm full wave guarantees bridge-free and pin-free soldering, even with the smallest track and SMD component clearances or high component placement density.
  • Page 40: Heating System

September 2007 Edition Structure and Function 3.5.4 Heating System 3.5.4.1 Main System The heating system consists of a heater set of 6 elements immersed in solder. The heaters are controlled proportionally by means of triacs, as a result of which, in combination with the direct contact between the heater and the solder, a very high temperature stability of the solder is reached.
  • Page 41: Inert Gas System

The soldering quality of inert gas soldering machines depends first and foremost on the re- sidual oxygen proportion. Thanks to the sophisticated design, it is possible to lower this proportion in the epm CIG compactto an adjustable, desired PPM value. 3.6.1 Inert Gas Atmosphere The automatic gas supply into the soldering chamber, in which the process modules are lo- cated, prevents oxidation during the soldering process.
  • Page 42: Condensate Trap (Option)

September 2007 Edition Structure and Function 3.6.4 Condensate Trap (Option) Fig. 3-15. Condensate Trap The condensate trap cleans the inert gas in the soldering chamber of flux vapors and re- duces the inner temperature. In the soldering chamber, there is a narrow exhaust shaft above the solder bath, through which the inert gas with the volatile components is exhausted out of the process chamber and fed to the cooling filter.
