This manual contains information for installing both the Avid Expansion Chassis and the Avid 3D Effects Option. Chapter 1 – Provides an overview of the Expansion Chassis and the 3D Effects Option. Chapter 2 – Describes how to install a populated Expansion Chassis when it is shipped as part of a new Avid systems.
Appendix A – Provides mechanical, electrical, environmental, and regulatory specifications for the Expansion Chassis and 3D Effect cover. Appendix B – Describes how to access and replace the two fuses in the Expansion Chassis. Symbols and Conventions This document uses the following special symbols and conventions: 1.
The Avid 3D Effects Option is a set of three processor boards that enhance and extend the effects capabilities of the Avid software. The boards are housed in a penthouse cover that you add to the Expansion Chassis and attach to the Advanced JPEG card in the chassis. The 3D Effects Option components include: •...
The front panel of the Expansion Chassis has a power on/off switch and a power on indicator. Figure 1 shows the rear panel of the Expansion Chassis. It has an AC power input, a fuse holder, 12 standard NuBus slot openings, and an expansion panel. The expansion panel supports future connector options that use a larger than standard NuBus opening.
NuBus architecture limitations (some slots in the Macintosh and the chassis are duplicates). For the Macintosh models that can connect to the Expansion Chassis, you can only use from nine to 13 slots between the Macintosh and the chassis.
Rack Mounting Options The Expansion Chassis, with or without the 3D Effect cover, can be mounted in a standard 19-inch rack. To ensure safe installation in a rack configuration, Avid recommends mounting the chassis in the lower half of the rack. A set of rack- mount slides are available from Avid for mounting the Expansion Chassis.

This is a 68-pin high-density D connector. Tighten the thumb screws to secure the connector.
SCSI connector 3D Effects cover Interface cable Figure 8: Expansion Chassis and 3D Effects Cover (Rear View) The 3D Effects cover is a SCSI device that attaches to the Macintosh built-in SCSI bus. To connect the 3D Effects cover: 1. Locate the 25-pin male to 25-pin male SCSI cable. It is approximately 30 inches long.
3. Attach the other end of the cable to the SCSI connector on the back of the Macintosh. Tighten the thumb screws to secure the connector. The 3D Effects cover is a self-terminating SCSI device. It requires no external SCSI terminator. If you have other devices on the Macintosh SCSI bus, make sure that the 3D Effects cover is the last device in the SCSI chain.
Testing the Expansion Chassis After you install the Expansion Chassis and connect all the cables, you need to test the chassis. Testing verifies that you have connected the Macintosh and the chassis correctly, and that the NuBus cards in the chassis are installed correctly and visible to the Macintosh.
If Text Slot Info does not report the correct information, fix any problems using “Populated Chassis Problems,” in Chapter 6. Then, repeat all the steps in “Testing the Expansion Chassis” on page 16 to ensure that the chassis is completely functional.
