RAD-UHF-SL-RS232-BD Overview The RAD-UHF-SL-RS232-BD radio is a wireless modem designed for the transmission of data communications for SCADA, telemetry and any other information and control applica- tions that utilize ASCII messaging techniques. The SL radio uses advanced “digital” mod- ulation and signal processing techniques to achieve exceptionally high data throughput ef- ficiency using traditional licensed narrow band radio channels.
Pw r Syn ch RxD > Tx RxS g Figure 1-2 RAD-UHF-SL-RS232-BD Radio System Architecture 1.3.1 Generic Connectivity The RAD-UHF-… Series is designed for SCADA and telemetry applications, and any other applications that use an ASCII communications protocol, and which connect physically using the RS-232 interface standard (although converters can be used to adapt other in- terfaces such as RS-422/485).
This simple system architecture provides a virtual connection between the two points, sim- ilar to a cable. Dependent of the hardware chosen, it is possible to provide a full-duplex connection, i.e., data transfer in both directions simultaneously, if required. Page 17
Normally, the radio system is allowed to operate “transparently”, allowing the application’s protocol to provide the addressing, and thus control the traffic. Where the application layer does not provide the addressing, the FL Series can provide it using SID codes™. 2313_en_A PHOENIX CONTACT RSPSupply - 1-888-532-2706 - www.RSPSupply.com http://www.RSPSupply.com/p-12961-Phoenix-Contact-5606858-Radio-Licensed-406-420-MHz-Serial-Radio.aspx...

In this scenario, the repeater is the master from an RF point of view, and the application master is effectively a “remote” from an RF point of view, even though it is controlling the data transfer on the system. PHOENIX CONTACT 2313_en_A RSPSupply - 1-888-532-2706 - www.RSPSupply.com...

DC Blocking Capability - 1.5 kV impulse (Rise Time 10 ms, Fall Time 700 ms) (Repe- tition 10 times) or 1.0 kV RMS 50 Hz sine wave for 1 minute. Phoenix Contact declares that the RAD-UHF-… radio equipment is in compliance with the essential requirements and other relevant provisions of the Directive 1999/5/EC. Therefore this equipment is labelled with the following CE-marking.
Tampering or replacement with non-factory components may adversely affect the safe use of the radio modem in hazardous locations and may void the approval. A power connector with screw-type retaining screws as supplied by Phoenix Contact MUST be used. 1.4.3 Low Voltage Safety (Europe) In order to comply with the R&TTE (Radio and Telecommunications Terminal Equipment)
The exceptions include short distances and where a test is done with a Phoenix Contact radio. However, where towers would need to be built just to do the test, a path loss study is more practical. A path loss study predicts the signal strength reliability and estimates the fade margin of a proposed radio link.
For long-range transmission paths where the signal is likely to be weaker, a low-loss cable type is recommended, especially if the length of cable must exceed 15 m (50 ft.). PHOENIX CONTACT 2313_en_A RSPSupply - 1-888-532-2706 - www.RSPSupply.com...

Hardware handshake lines can be employed to provide flow control. However, in the te- lemetry industry, many devices do not always support all (or any) flow control lines. NOTE: Because of the great variety of handshaking methods, Phoenix Contact does not recommend full handshaking implementation. However, Ready-To-Send (RTS) and Clear-To-Send (CTS) can be configured, if necessary.

All configuration parameters are held in non-volatile memory (NVRAM) on the Data Radio Modem. Configuration is fully programmable via the Systems Port using the programming cable (Part No. 5606653 for RAD-UHF-FL-… and 5606657 for RAD-UHF-SL-RS232-BD). Disassembly of the unit is not required for any reason other than for factory servicing.
