Installation Practices Install the equipment in accordance with the instructions provided in this document and in the documentation provided with auxiliary devices.

    Use only new Nordson-authorized refurbished or replacement parts. Read and comply with the manufacturer’s instructions and the MSDS supplied with equipment cleaning compounds.     FP900 HP Ambient PUR Handgun Equipment Shutdown To safely complete many of the procedures described in this document, the equipment must first be shut down. The level of shut down required varies by the type of equipment in use and the procedure being completed.

    General Safety Warnings and Cautions Table 1 contains the general safety warnings and cautions that apply to Nordson hot melt and cold adhesive equipment. Review the table and carefully read all of the warnings or cautions that apply to the type of equipment described in this manual.
  • Page 12 WARNING! Risk of fire or explosion! Nordson adhesive equipment is not rated for use in explosive environments and should not be used with solvent-based adhesives that can create an explosive HM, CA, PC atmosphere when processed.
  • Page 13 CAUTION! Nordson hot melt equipment is factory tested with Nordson Type R fluid that contains polyester adipate plasticizer. Certain hot melt materials can react with Type R fluid and form a solid gum that can clog the equipment.

    FP900 HP Ambient PUR Handgun Other Safety Precautions Do not use an open flame to heat hot melt system components. Check high pressure hoses daily for signs of excessive wear, damage, or leaks. Never point a dispensing handgun at yourself or others.

    FP900 HP Ambient PUR Handgun Safety Labels and Tags Figure 1 illustrates the location of the product safety labels and tags affixed to the equipment. Table 2 provides an illustration of the hazard identification symbols that appear on each safety label and tag, the meaning of the symbol, or the exact wording of any safety message.

    The module can be positioned to apply material either vertically or horizontally. An air supply line connects to FP900 handguns through an air pressure regulator, eliminating the need for an air control kit. Part 1094920A02...

  • Page 19: Nozzle Selection

    FP900 HP Ambient PUR Handgun Nozzle Selection Swirl nozzles are single-piece assemblies consisting of a retainer nut and a wide pattern swirl disk. The swirl nozzle’s recessed tip protects the nozzle from damage that can be caused by tools or by dropping the nozzle. The swirl nozzle is easier to clean but can be damaged if it is installed incorrectly.

    After unpacking the handgun, make the following inspections: Check for handgun surface dents, scratches, corrosion, or other physical damage. Contact your Nordson representative if there is any physical damage. Remove any foreign material in the service block air and fluid ports.

    Multi-plane swivel fitting (at hose) Install the Suspension System See Figure 4. The FP900 handgun is most effectively used in conjunction with Nordson’s suspension package. This suspension package, which includes a pivoting arm and retracting tool balancer, carries the hose and handgun weight and provides the operator with a wide range of handgun movement.

    FP900 HP Ambient PUR Handgun Install the Vertical Mast 1. See Figure 5. Mount the vertical mast (1) to the mounting base (3). 2. Secure the mounting base to the floor. 3. Secure the vertical mast to the rear of the work table using the mast support clamp (2).

    FP900 HP Ambient PUR Handgun Install the Pivoting Arm on the Mast The pivoting arm swings on a bracket attached to the vertical mast. The pivoting arm carries the weight of the hose and handgun and provides the lateral movement that gives the operator a wide application range.

    FP900 HP Ambient PUR Handgun Install the Tool Balancer 1. See Figure 7. Loosen the cable stop screw (7). 2. Allow the cable to retract through the cable stop until 25 mm (1 in.) of cable is left free beyond the cable stop. The cable should be completely retracted into the balancer drum.

    FP900 HP Ambient PUR Handgun Connect the Handgun and Hose The FP900 handgun comes preassembled except for the auxiliary guide handle and the air line tubing. The hydraulic hose, the handgun, and the air line tubing must be assembled and installed onto the suspension system before any connections are made to the bulk unloader or the air supply.

    FP900 HP Ambient PUR Handgun Connect the Handgun and Hose to the Pivot Arm and Mast 1. Wrap the hose straps around the hydraulic hose 1.2 m (4 ft) from the handgun end of the hose as shown in Figure 10.
  • Page 27 FP900 HP Ambient PUR Handgun 5. See Figure 12. Remove the stationary hose mount lower clamp piece (3). 6. Taking care that the hose is not twisted, place the hose against the upper clamp piece (2). NOTE: Provide a smooth loop for the hose. There must be no sharp bends in the hose.

    FP900 HP Ambient PUR Handgun Adjust the Tool Balancer The tool balancer must be adjusted to set the final handgun resting place and the resistance felt while maneuvering the handgun. 1. With the cable stop against the balancer drum, adjust the tool balancer to obtain the desired tension using the Increasing Tension and Decreasing Tension procedures later in this section.

Wind the balancer drum clockwise, increasing the cable tension. NOTE: A spring clip prevents unwinding of the internal spring. A clicking sound will be heard when winding the drum.

    FP900 HP Ambient PUR Handgun Balance Hanger Removal See Figure 16. The balance hanger can be removed from the FP900 handgun if it will not be used. To do this, loosen the M12 jam nut and then remove the M12 screw that secures the balance hanger.

    This section provides instructions for safely starting up and operating FP900 handguns and for using the FP900 swirl handgun air flow control to adjust the swirl material pattern. WARNING!   • Page 33 FP900 HP Ambient PUR Handgun 7. To adjust output pressure at the nozzle, turn the regulator adjustment screw clockwise to increase pressure, counterclockwise to decrease pressure. 8. Stop dispensing material by releasing the trigger. WARNING! Place the trigger in the locked position any time the handgun is not in use.

    FP900 HP Ambient PUR Handgun Swirl Handgun Pattern Adjustment Adjust the material pattern of FP900 swirl handguns using the following method: 1. See Figure 17. Turn the air adjust screw (1) and the fluid valve adjust screw (2) clockwise until seated.

    Swirl Handgun to Extrusion Handgun Conversion NOTE: Refer to Nozzles under Parts for available extrusion nozzles. The FP900 handgun can be converted to from a swirl handgun to an extrusion handgun. To do this: 1. Remove hydraulic pressure from the bulk unloader. Refer to the bulk unloader manual for the correct procedure.

    FP900 HP Ambient PUR Handgun Shutdown and Handgun Storage CAUTION! Risk of equipment damage. Do not allow the handgun to remain idle for more than 30 minutes. Doing so can cause PUR to cure inside the handgun. Follow this procedure to store the handgun when it is not in use.

NOTE: Actuating the handgun while injecting grease ensures that the hydraulic passageway is filled to and through the nozzle orifice. 6. Uncap the fluid inlet and then inject more grease to completely fill the passageway.

    Failure to relieve hydraulic pressure can result in serious injury. Relieve hydraulic pressure when instructed to do so. This section contains troubleshooting procedures for the FP900 handgun. The procedures are given in a problem–reason–correction format.
