ENGINE OIL
API classifications of engine oil
The American Petroleum Institute classifies
engine oils according to their performance
(quality). Each category is given two letters.
The first letter indicates the field of applica-
tion.
API
S= Service.
categories valid primarily
for fuel engines.
C= Commercial. API categories valid prima-
rily for diesel engines.
The second letter indicates the quality in
ascending alphabetical order.
API-SG=Oil for fuel engine
API-CD=Oil for diesel engine
A higher quality than specified

CCMC stands for Comite des Constuc-
teurs d'automobiles
du Marche Commun
(Committee

Community).
The CCMC system is based on the API
classifications
but takes into account the
special lubrication
requirements
engines of European vehicles.
