Electric shock hazard:
• Tool is designed to detect
electromagnetic field emitted from
Camera Sondes and buried metallic utilities.
There are buried cables, pipes, and utilities
this instrument CANNOT detect.
• LOCATING is not an exact science. The only
certain way to be sure of the existence,
location, or depth of buried utilities is to
carefully expose (dig up) the utility.
• De-energize any circuits in or around the
work area.
• Do not expose tool to rain or moisture.
• Use tool only for intended purpose as
described in this manual. Failure to observe
these warnings could result in severe injury
or death.

Quick Guide
Prepare for Use
When you unpack your RL8873 Locator, make sure there is no shipping damage.
The RL8873 comes with six "C" batteries already installed. If you need to change the
batteries, the compartment is located on the back of the "head" of the Receiver.
RL8873 Receiver

Controls and Indicators

ON/OFF Button
Press to turn the
Receiver on/off.
When the unit is
powered on, it will load
the settings from the
previous usage. (see back to
program custom settings)
Note: Unit will automatically shut
off if no keys are pressed within a
10 minute period.
FREQUENCY Button
1. Used to set and store
frequency presets (see back).
2. Hold for 10 seconds to change
from feet/inches to metric.
3. BACKLIGHT
Hold the ON/OFF and FREQUENCY
buttons together for 5 seconds
for the display to be backlit.
Digital Depth Estimate
The RL8873 Locator estimates the depth
automatically and up to 30' . The depth
is displayed at the top of the LCD display
in feet and inches. Locator must be in
proper mode to read accurately.
Holding the
button for 10 seconds
will change from feet/inches to metric
measurement.

Pipe Alignment
Indicator
GAIN Button (Up or Down)
Use to adjust the gain level for the receiver. Continually
adjust gain to high enough volume to hear.
Also used to select SONDE or LINE mode (see below)
Low Battery
The RL8873 Locator
will indicate low
battery condition by
displaying low
battery icon at the
bottom right of the
LCD screen.
