    1. You can define the sewing speed by means of the foot pedal. The more the foot pedal is pressed downwards, the more the sewing speed increases. 2. By letting go of the foot pedal, the machine is stopped. NOTE: Before carrying out initial operation of the sewing machine, practise using the foot pedal without a thread. Extension table The extension table increases the working area during sewing operations and can simply be removed. The use of the free arm enables sewing of places that are difficult to access. Removing the extension table 1. Remove the extension table as described in the figure. 2. In order to reinstall the extension table, connect it to the sewing machine again (quilting with sewing table). Press the sewing foot retainer lever (2) and lower the sewing foot lever (18). Like this, the sewing foot is connected and fixed to the sewing foot retainer. Changing the needle 1. Disconnect the power plug. 2. Place the needle in the highest position by moving the hand wheel (23) towards yourself. 3. Lower the sewing foot by means of the sewing foot lever (18). 4. Loosen the needle clamp screw (20) by turning anticlockwise. 5. Remove the used needle from the needle retainer. 6. Replace the new needle, so that the flat side points to the back. When inserting the needle, it has to be pushed into the needle retainer as far as possible. 7. Afterwards tighten the needle clamp screw (20). Attention! Risk of injury! Check in regular intervals whether the needle is still straight and sharp. A bent needle can break and cause injuries! Knots and skipped stitches in Jersey fabrics, finely woven silk or silk fabrics are often caused by damaged needles. • Page 19: Adjusting The Tension Of The Upper Thread

Adjusting the tension of the upper thread When sewing with straight stitch, the upper and lower threads are connected to each other between the fabric parts. 1. Select the appropriate tension for the thread tensioning disc by means of the thread tension adjusting wheel (10). (A) Newly adjusted value The lower the numerical value, the lower the tension of the upper thread. To lower the tension of the upper thread, turn the adjusting wheel as indicated in the figure on the right. The higher the numerical value, the higher the tension of the upper thread. To increase the tension of the upper thread, turn the adjusting wheel as indicated in the figure on the right. Tension of the upper thread with regard to zig-zag stitch: In order to achieve good results when sewing with zig-zag stitches, the tension of the upper thread should be lower than when sewing with straight stitch. The upper thread should be visible on the back side of the sewing part. Stitch pattern rotary switch 1. Move the needle out of the fabric. 2. Select the desired stitch pattern by means of the adjusting wheel (14). 3. For the elastic stitches (lower row), select the desired number by means of the stitch pattern rotary switch (14). By means of the stitch length rotary switch (13; see below), you adjust the lower stitch pattern row by positions 1-10. Buttonholes are sewed with the symbols (A), see page 25. • Page 20: Stitch Length Rotary Switch

The range between 0.5 to 4 is qualified for sewing zig-zag stitches. For sewing with an elastic stitch, the adjustment 1-10 is selected. How can the quality of the elastic stitch be improved? If this adjustment does not provide a satisfactory result when sewing with an elastic stitch, you can alter the stitch density by means of the stitch length rotary switch (13): • "-" denser stitches • "+" wider stitches. NOTE: The length of the stitch seamlessly changes with regard to an adjustment of the rotary switch between 0 and 1, and therefore should be adjusted correspondingly. Reverse sew button 1. Press the reverse sew button downward if you only want to sew backwards. Client: ALDI Australia Date: 25.09.2007 Project: Lumina ESM 008 Version: 02 Language: Page: (of 40 pages)

Lower the feeder by pressing the feeder lever (B) downward and moving it in the direction identified by the arrow in the figure. 3. Lift the feeder by pressing the feeder lever (B) downward and moving it in the direction identified by the arrow in the figure. NOTE: For all usual sewing operations the feeder should be lifted. Rotary switch for adjusting the sewing foot pressure For all usual sewing operations, the sewing pressure is preset to level 3. 1. Set the rotary switch for the sewing pressure (4) to level 2, if you attach appliques and embroideries, or if you sew net fabrics. 2. Set the rotary switch (4) to level 3, if you work with chiffon, lace fabric, yam and other fine blended fabrics. 3. Set the rotary switch (4) to level 1, if you sew cotton flannel and stretch fabric. Make sure that sufficiently long thread ends are overlapping, in order to prepare the sewing machine for the next work. Altering the sewing direction 1. Stop the sewing machine and move the hand wheel (23) toward yourself, so that the needle is lowered into the fabric. 2. Lift the sewing foot by means of the sewing foot lever (18), and turn the fabric into the desired direction by using the needle as a centre of rotation. 3. Lower the sewing foot and continue sewing. The markings on the needle plate are very useful to maintain the distance of the seam to the edge. (A) Needle plate markings (B) Corner marking (C) Needle plate (D) Needle hole (E) Distance from the edge to the eye The following data refers to the distance between the needle and the needle plate marking: Number on the needle Distance in cm Sewing a right angle 1. When sewing a right angle, make sure that a distance of 1.6 cm to the fabric edge is kept. 2. Stop the sewing machine if the fabric edge is placed on the same height as the corner marking on the needle plate (15). 3. Move the hand wheel (23) towards yourself, so that the needle is lowered into the fabric. 4. Lift the sewing foot by means of the sewing foot lever (18) and turn the fabric to the desired direction until its edge is flush with the needle plate marking 1.6 cm. 5. • Lower the feeder (see page 18). 1. Place the button on the desired place on the fabric. 2. Adjust both buttonholes along the opening of the sewing foot (see figure), and place the left buttonhole directly beneath the needlepoint. 3. Lower the sewing foot. 4. By using the hand wheel (23), check whether the stitch length is adjusted in a way that enables the buttonholes to be exactly met. 5. If necessary, alter the stitch length by means of the stitch length rotary switch (13), or by means of the stitch pattern rotary switch (14). A sewing needle placed on the sewing foot serves to produce a bar during the sewing process, which facilitates wrapping a thread around the bottom side of the button later on. 6. Sew about five stitches and lift the needle. 7. Make sure that approximately 20 cm of the thread end remains if you want a tighter button neck. 8. Thread the upper thread downward through a buttonhole and wrap the thread several times round the thread connecting the button with the sewing part, in order to produce a button neck. 9. Pull the thread through to the bottom side of the fabric and fasten it with knots. NOTE: After sewing the button on, lift the feeder again. • Page 27: Sewing On Buttons (Button Sewing Foot)

In case of heavier materials, a button shaft is often required. 1. For this purpose, place a needle or a match on the button before sewing, and before clamping it by lowering the sewing foot. 2. Sew the button on as described above. 3. Make sure that the upper thread is a bit longer, when you remove the workpiece from the machine. 4. Now thread the upper thread through a hole of the button and wrap it round the stitch threads, producing a button shaft. 5. Afterwards fasten the upper and lower thread on the back side by knots. Fix the blind stitch foot, see paragraph Change the sewing foot, page 9. 2. Fold the fabric into the desired fabric breadth, as described in the figure. On the right, an edge of approx. 4 mm has to remain when the seam is refolded. 3. Place the seam beneath the blind stitch foot, so that the guide of the foot runs along the edge of the folded seam. 4. Adjust the guide on the blind stitch foot by means of the screw, so that in case of the highest overstitch the needle only meets the edge of the seam. On the other side of the seam only one point of the thread should be visible. 5. Remove the fabric from the machine and smooth it out. The unfolded fabric shows a blind stitch seam.
