Changing A (Auto) Mode Settings (Shooting Menu)

AF Area Mode

A (auto) M d (Shooting menu) M AF area mode
Use this option to determine how the camera selects the focus area for autofocus.

Face priority (default setting)
When the camera detects a human face, it focuses
on that face. See "Face Detection" (A 48) for more
information. If more than one face is detected, the
camera focuses on the face closest to the camera.
When taking pictures of subjects other than people,
or framing a subject with which no face is detected,
the AF area mode setting switches to Auto, and the
camera will automatically select the focus area
containing the subject closest to the camera.

Auto
The camera automatically selects the focus area
containing the subject closest to the camera. Press
the shutter-release button halfway to activate the
focus area. When the shutter-release button is
pressed halfway, the focus area (up to nine areas)
selected by the camera will be displayed in the
monitor.

Manual
Select one of 99 focus areas displayed in the monitor.
This option is suited to situations in which the
intended subject is relatively still and not positioned
in the center of the frame.
Press the multi selector H, I, J, or K to select the
focus area displayed in the monitor that contains the
subject, and shoot.
• Before making any of the settings below, press the
k button to cancel the focus-area selection.
- Flash mode
- Macro mode, self-timer, or exposure
compensation
When the settings are complete, press the k button
again to reactivate the focus-area selection.
