Thank you for purchasing the Flipper Fidelity speaker kit for a Stern Pinball machine.

Your kit includes the following:

(1) 10" Woofer with Crossover

(2) 4" Speakers with wiring harness and integrated spacers

(1) 4 pin to 2 pin adaptor (inset photo)

(1) Volume Control Assembly (not pictured)

(2) ½" #6 Wood Screws

(4) ½" Female to Male Hex Spacers for Pro and Premium OR

(8) ½" Female to Male Hex Spacers for LE

(2) Insulated crimp on spade connectors

Please make sure all parts are present before starting your

installation.

Tools required for kit installation:



1/4" nut driver.



5/16" nut driver.



11/32" nut driver.



Wire terminal crimping tool w/ wire cutter.

Note: Use of a drill driver or powered screwdriver is not recommended. Avoid over‐tightening. The fasteners used by Stern, and

those included in this kit, need only be tightened enough to hold the component in place and prevent vibration when in use.

Please allow approximately 30 minutes to install. This kit requires no permanent modification to the machine. You may want to take

photos of your particular machine in the event you wish to accurately restore it to its' original configuration.

Step One – Machine Preparation.

Make sure you have adequate space available to access the front and both sides of the machine. Make sure the machine is turned

off and unplugged from its' power source. To install this kit you will need to remove the translite to access the back box speakers,

speaker connections, and to mount the volume control. Woofer installation requires access to the inside of the base cabinet. If you

are not familiar with the procedures to access these areas, i.e. removal of the translite, removal of the playfield glass, and raising the

playfield to the service position; please refer to the Stern owners' manual.

Step Two – Remove the back‐box speakers.

Stern Speaker Installation Instructions

First, remove the translite. For safety, I would find a towel to

drape across the machine for the speaker/display panel to rest

on. This will protect both your speaker/display panel and the

side rails from getting scratched. Lay the panel on its front,

spanning across the side rails. See photo. Carefully examine the

existing installation of the back box speakers. The flat wires

going to the fasteners holding the existing back box speakers are

ground straps which must be replaced when the new speakers

are installed. There is a piece of tape holding the speaker wire

connecting the two speakers together. Carefully remove this

tape. I like to use it later, in the same manner, to secure the new

wiring harness.

Page 2 Locate the existing speaker connector which consists of two four‐wire AMP connectors. Disconnect the connector coming from the speakers. This is a good time to install the supplied four pin to two pin adapter with attached two pin z‐clip. ou will need a ¼” nut‐driver for speaker removal. Both speakers are attached to each other so be careful not to let one fall. This could result in damage to the machine. There are four 11/32” nuts, two for each speaker. Remove all four nuts and set aside, as you will need these later. Once the nuts are removed, lift the speakers off the studs and set aside. I find it is easier to do the right one first, place this speaker in the back box, then remove the left speaker. There is one ground wire attached to the right speaker, remember to re‐connect it when you place the new speakers in position. Step Three – Installation of the back‐box speakers Included in this kit are either (4) or (8) ½” hex spacers. You will need them for this step. The quantity of (4) are for a Pro and Premium and the quantity (8) are for an LE version. Attach the wiring harness to one of the 4” speakers, connecting the blue spade connectors; the wide connector to the wide terminal (also marked “‐“), the narrow connector to the narrow terminal (also marked “+”). The system came with four or eight ½” female to male spacers which act to extend the studs to accommodate the spacer ring on the front of the Flipper Fidelity Speakers. These need to be screwed on to the four or eight posts at this point. Then, place this speaker (with the wires attached) to the right of the display. The wires and speaker terminals will be closest to the back box. You may tighten them with a ¼” nut driver or small ...
Page 3 wrench. After the spacers are in place put the speaker on the spacers. This will take a little muscle. They will go on, but the speaker screw holes are tight. Once the speakers are on the posts, then replace the four original screws to secure the speakers to the spacers. Attach the remaining speaker, in the same manner, to the left of the display. Run the wire with the pink spade connectors from the right speaker to the left speaker and, following the same convention, carefully push them on to their corresponding speaker terminals. If you purchased a “Volume Control Delete” speaker system, connect the new speaker harness to the 2‐pin connector where you disconnected the factory speakers, and you are done with the back box speakers. Proceed to step 5, the removal of the cabinet speaker. Step Four – Volume Control Installation. Mounting the Volume Control Several options exist for mounting the volume control. The volume control is attached to a metal L‐bracket with two small holes on the side. You can mount the volume control using the two ½” #6 screws provided. The screws will fit snugly into the holes and can easily be driven in by hand with a ¼” nut driver. The volume control assembly can be screwed in anywhere on the right side of the back box. I like to attach it very low, just behind the speaker panel. This gives enough room to add a Flipper Fidelity LED Panel. Page 4 The volume control can be conveniently mounted to the inside of the coindoor with the addition of the Flipper Fidelity Stern Volume Control Coindoor Relocation Kit. Contact Flipper Fidelity for kit details and pricing. Connecting the Volume Control. There are two wires coming off the volume control. One is 2” shorter than the other. The shorter wire has a z‐clip attached to it. This shorter wire connects to the connector coming off your new back box speakers. The longer wire connects to the lead coming off the board. (This is where you disconnected the stock speakers and inserted the 4 pin to two pin adaptor.) Step Five – Removal of the base cabinet speaker. Locate the speaker in the base of the cabinet by raising the playfield to the service position. Cut the wires going to the existing woofer. You will want to cut them as close to the speaker terminals as possible. Using a 5/16” nut driver, remove all four nuts holding the speaker in place and remove the speaker. Place the speaker aside as you no longer will be using this. Keep the nuts as you need these in the next step. ...
Page 5 Step Six – Installing the woofer spacer / adaptor. Test fit the woofer spacer, looking for interference with the bundle of wires crossing the base cabinet just in front of the large power transformer. It may be necessary to remove or relocate the nylon cable strap to gain clearance (see photos). Some of the wires may not have enough slack to clear the spacer. In that case, remove those wires from the bundle and re‐route them along the wood stringer at the back of the cash drawer. Once you have resolved any clearance issues, fasten the spacer in place with the nuts saved from the removal of the original woofer. Step Seven – Installing the new woofer. Your new woofer mounts to the spacer ring with the four #8 screws. I like to have the x‐over to the left of the speaker as shown below. Crimp the female spade terminals onto the existing speaker wire. The wire with the white stripe connects to the “neg” terminal on the woofer. Here is where you have a choice. The new woofer has two positive terminals. The “high” is the standard input. It in no way affects the output of the woofer. The “low” reduces the woofer output by about 4db, a minor reduction, but a reduction. This is a way to further tune the sound to your liking. Try the high setting first, then try the low. Leave it where you like it best. ...
Page 6 Step Seven – Adjust the volume control. This will be done to taste. Remember, the volume control you just installed affects only the back box speakers. The machine volume control affects all speakers, thus it can be thought of as a master volume control. I suggest setting the machine volume somewhere between 45 and 54, depending on desired impact.
