    Important Safe Operation Practices WARNING: This symbol points out important safety instructions which, if not followed, could endanger the personal safety and/or property of yourself and others.   • Page 4 A missing or damaged discharge cover can cause blade contact or thrown object injuries. Many injuries occur as a result of the mower being pulled over the foot during a fall caused by slipping or tripping. Do not hold on to the mower if you are falling; release the handle immediately.
  • Page 5 Service Safe Handling Of Gasoline: To avoid personal injury or property damage use extreme care in handling gasoline. Gasoline is extremely flammable and the vapors are explosive. Serious personal injury can occur when gasoline is spilled on yourself or your clothes, which can ignite.

    Spark Arrestor WARNING: This machine is equipped with an internal combustion engine and should not be used on or near any unimproved forest-covered, brush covered or grass-covered land unless the engine’s exhaust system is equipped with a spark arrester meeting applicable local or state laws (if any). If a spark arrester is used, it should be maintained in effective working order by the operator.

    Tighten star knobs to secure upper handle to lower handle. Make sure that each carriage bolt is seated properly in the handle. • One Lawn Mower Operator’s Manual • One Hardware Pack Insert a carriage bolt from the hardware pack into the upper hole on the handle mounting bracket.
  • Page 9 The rope guide is attached to the right side of the upper handle. See Fig. 3-3. Loosen the wing nut which secures the rope guide. Figure 3-3 Hold blade control against upper handle. Pull starter rope out of the engine. Release blade control.
  • Page 10 Follow the steps below to attach the grass catcher: Lift rear discharge door. See Fig. 3-6. Figure 3-6 Place grass catcher on the pivot rod. Let go of discharge door so that it rests on the grass catcher. To remove grass catcher, lift rear discharge door on the mower. Lift grass catcher up and out, off of the pivot rod.

    Controls and Features Recoil Starter Grass Catcher Blade Control The blade control is attached to the upper handle of the mower. Depress and squeeze it against the upper handle to operate the unit. Release it to stop engine and blade. WARNING: This blade control is a safety device.

    Using Your Lawn Mower Be sure lawn is clear of stones, sticks, wire, or other objects which could damage lawn mower or engine. Such objects could be accidently thrown by the mower in any direction and cause serious personal injury to the operator and others.

    Always observe safety rules when performing any maintenance. • The warranty on this lawn mower does not cover items that have been subjected to operator abuse or negligence. To receive full value from warranty, operator must maintain the lawn mower as instructed here.

    To ensure safe operation of your mower, periodically check the blade bolt for correct torque. Off-Season Storage The following steps should be taken to prepare your lawn mower for storage. • Clean and lubricate mower thoroughly as described in the lubrication instructions.

    Check Oil Level NOTE: Be sure to check the engine on a level surface with the engine stopped. Remove the oil filler cap and wipe the dipstick clean. See Fig. 10-2. Oil Fill Cap/ Dipstick Upper Level Figure 10- Insert the dipstick into the oil filler neck, but do not screw it in.

    Engine Maintenance WARNING: Shut off the engine before performing any maintenance. To prevent accidental start-up, disconnect the spark plug boot. IMPORTANT: If engine must be tipped to transport equipment or to inspect or remove grass, keep spark plug side of engine up.
  • Page 20 Oil Service • Check oil level regularly. • Be sure correct oil level is maintained. Check every five hours or daily before starting engine. See oil checking procedure in the Operation section. Oil Change IMPORTANT: Be sure to check engine on a level surface with the engine stopped.
  • Page 21 Spark Plug Service WARNING: DO NOT check for spark with spark plug removed. DO NOT crank engine with spark plug removed. To ensure proper engine operation, the spark plug must be properly gapped and free of deposits. Remove the spark plug boot and use a spark plug wrench to remove the plug.

    Fuel Filter Service The fuel filter cannot be cleaned and must be replaced once a year or every 100 operating hours; more often if run with old gasoline. Remove all fuel from tank by running engine until it stops from lack of fuel. Remove c-clamp from fuel line and remove fuel line from tank outlet.
  • Page 23 If the engine on your mower fails to conform to this limited warranty, MTD will cover the cost of parts and labor associated with any adjustments and/or repairs necessary to return your engine to its warranted condition.

    MTD LLC (MTD), The United States Environment Protection Agency (U. S. EPA) The U. S. EPA and MTD are pleased to explain the emissions control system warranty on your model year 2005 and later small off-road engine. New small off-road engines must be designed, built and equipped to meet the stringent anti-smog standards. MTD must warranty the emission control system on your engine for the period of time listed below, provided there has been no abuse, neglect or improper maintenance of your small off-road engine.
