Engine Air Filter

A specially designed dry filter is standard equipment and
supplies clean combustion air to the engine.
NOTE: Do not operate engine with a damaged air filter
or without an air filter element. Dirt will enter the
engine causing dust induced engine damage.
NOTE: Do not block air intake to the filter such as
setting an object in front of the air intake opening.
Type Air Filters
Internal
Refer to Figure 5-16:
20 HP and 24 HP Kawasaki engines and 22 HP and 26
HP Briggs & Stratton engines are supplied with internal
air filters. Perform engine air filter maintenance per the
Engine Operator's Manual and "Maintenance Schedule"
on page 33.
Canister Type Air Filters
Refer to Figure 5-17 & Figure 5-18:
The 26 HP Kawasaki engine is equipped with a canister
type air filter mounted above the engine. Perform engine
air filter maintenance per the Engine Operator's Manual
and "Maintenance Schedule" on page 33.
1. Replace filter element every 200 hours or every year,
(whichever comes first). Service more frequently
when used in dusty conditions.
2. Release retaining clips and remove filter element.
Clean canister with a damp cloth.
3. Before installing a new filter element, inspect it by
placing a bright light inside and rotate the element
slowly, looking for any holes or tears in the paper.
Also check gaskets for cuts or tears. Do not attempt
to use a damaged element which will allow abrasive
particles to enter the engine.
4. Inspect burp valve. Replace burp valve if it is
cracked, torn, stays open or is missing. See also
"Burp Valve Information" on page 43.
5. Install new inner element into the new outer element
as shown in Figure 5-18.
6. Reinstall canister cap with burp valve positioned
below the canister. Make sure it seals all around the
canister before latching retaining clips.
7. Check all fittings and clamps periodically for
tightness. Inspect hoses for holes or cracks.
8. Periodically check engine intake hose for signs of
ingested dust. Repair source of ingested dirt.
9. Never operate a machine without an air filter
installed.
