Shooting (All Modes)

The camera takes time to turn on: Delete files or format the memory card.
The shutter-release is disabled:
• The battery is exhausted (0 21, 32).
• The memory card is full (0 32).
• The flash is charging (0 106).
• The camera is not in focus (0 34).
• You are currently filming a slow-motion, 4K, or time-lapse movie (0 45).
Only one picture is taken each time the shutter-release button is pressed in continuous
release mode: I is selected in continuous mode (0 97) and the built-in
flash is raised.
The camera does not focus automatically:
• The subject is not suited to autofocus (0 185).
• The camera is in manual focus mode (0 184, 186).
Focus does not lock when the shutter-release button is pressed halfway: Set the
focus mode to AF-S (0 184, 189).
Focus area selection is unavailable: Focus area selection is not available in
auto-area AF (0 188) or face priority (0 40). In other AF-area modes, the
focus area can be selected by pressing J.
AF-area mode selection is unavailable: The camera is in auto, creative, sports, or
best moment capture mode (0 33, 58, 74, 76), manual focus mode is
selected (0 184), the h Scene auto selector is used (0 161), or elec-
tronic vibration reduction is enabled for movies (0 183).
Image size selection is unavailable: NEF (RAW) is selected for image quality
(0 162).
The camera is slow to record photos: Turn long exposure noise reduction off
(0 179) and choose an option for ISO sensitivity (0 172) other than
6400 (NR) and 12800 (NR). In creative mode, additional time may be
needed to record photos when HDR or Easy panorama is selected
(0 62, 63).
