When using a take-up cassette proceed as fol-
lows: attach the leader tongue of the film to the
core of the cassette spool so that it winds on
to the spool with the bar across the end of the
core on the left as you look along the film, i.e.
facing in the opposite direction to that of the
cassette containing the unexposed film. Replace
the spool in the cassette and insert the cassette
into the camera so that the coupling dog (32)
engages the bar in the core of the spool; finally
pull the film taut so that it runs accurately along
the slightly recessed film track from one cas-
sette to the other (Fig. 20).

It is not necessary to trim the beginning of the
film specially. Any shape of leader can be used
with the take-up spool of the EXA IIa, either the
narrow tongue provided on standard commer-
cial cassette loadings or, even better, ? straight
cut across the film (when cutting lengths of
film from bulk rolls). When employing a take-up
cassette the film must be trimmed to suit the
core of the cassette spool (for various trimming
patterns see Fig.21).
If the film is being advanced correctly the
retracted rewind crank (14) will begin to rotate
as the film is wound on after taking about 6
