It is strongly recommended that you follow these step-by-step
numbered instructions to set up and quickly begin using your
new Digital camera.
For more detailed instructions on advanced features, please refer to
the printed Basic Manual included in your package, or the Reference
Manual on the CD-ROM.

PREPARING THE CAMERA FOR USE

Before you begin using your Olympus Digital camera...

Loading the battery
Note: The batteries and xD-Picture card
compartments are accessed by opening the
respective compartment covers.
• Close the lens barrier.
• Slide the battery compartment cover to the direction of the
arrow, and lift open the cover as shown in the illustration.
• Insert the batteries into the compartment.
• Close the battery compartment cover so that it pushes the
battery in and slide the cover while pressing the
Note: If the battery compartment cover is hard to
close, do not force it. Press
to close the cover, and then slide it into position.
• To remove the batteries, make sure that the monitor and the
lamps at the side of the viewfinder are off.

TURNING ON THE CAMERA

All you need to do is slide the lens barrier open or closed to turn the camera ON or OFF.

Turning the camera ON
(SHOOTING MODE)
• Slide the lens barrier open fully until it clicks. The lens extends and the subject is displayed on the monitor.
• To turn the camera off, slide the lens barrier until you feel the first click. Wait until the lens is fully retracted, then
close the lens barrier all the way.
Power on
TIP
To maximize battery life, the built-in power-saver operates, and the camera enters sleep mode after approximately three (3)
minutes of non-use.

Setting the Date and Time
Set the date and time before using the camera for the first time. This affects the way image file names are
created, and will conveniently include this information with each picture.
• With the front lens barrier closed, press

UNPACKING THE BOX CONTENTS

Gather your Digital camera and the parts as shown in the illustration. You'll need these to complete the steps for the camera
set-up procedures that follow. The items, such as batteries, supplied with the camera may differ depending on the area you
purchase the product.

Inserting the xD-Picture Card
The xD-Picture Card is where the camera stores your pictures
and is available in a variety of memory capacities. The pictures
you take with the camera remain on the xD-Picture Card even
when the camera is turned off and/or the batteries are removed.
• Open the card cover.
• Face the card the correct way and insert it into the card slot.
• Insert the xD-Picture Card into the spring-loaded card slot as
shown in the illustration. Push the card fully into the slot. The card
will lock into place when fully inserted.
• To remove, push the card all the way in to unlock it, then let it return
slowly.
• Close the card cover securely.

    SHOOTING BASICS Shooting mode This camera allows you to take still pictures and record movies. This camera has 7 shooting modes to choose from depending on the shooting conditions and the effect you want to achieve. The factory default setting of the shooting mode is PROGRAM AUTO. For normal shooting which does not require any special setting or effect, you do not need to follow this procedure.
  • Page 26 PROGRAM AUTO (Factory default setting) Used for regular photography. The camera automatically makes the settings for natural color balance. Other functions, such as the flash mode and metering, can be adjusted manually. (Portrait) Suitable for taking a portrait-style shot of a person. The camera automatically sets the optimal shooting conditions.
  • Page 27 TAKING STILL PICTURES You can take still pictures using either the monitor or the viewfinder. Both methods are easy as all you have to do is to press the shutter button. Taking still pictures using the monitor Open the lens barrier fully. •...
  • Page 28 IF CORRECT FOCUS CANNOT BE OBTAINED (FOCUS LOCK) When correct focus cannot be obtained on the subject you want to shoot, you can focus the camera on another point at roughly the same distance (focus lock) and take the picture as explained below. Open the lens barrier fully.
  • Page 29 RECORDING MOVIES You can record movies with this camera. Sound is recorded at the same time. The focus and zoom are locked. If the distance to the subject changes, focus may be compromised. Open the lens barrier fully. • The lens extends and the monitor turns on. Press ) to display the virtual dial screen.

  • Page 31 ZOOMING IN ON A SUBJECT (OPTICAL ZOOM) Telephoto and wide-angle shooting are possible at 3 magnification (the optical zoom limit, equivalent to 35 mm - 105 mm on a 35 mm camera). By combining the optical zoom with the digital zoom, zoom magnification can be increased to a maximum of approximately 12 .
  • Page 32 Auto-flash (No indication) The flash fires automatically in low light or backlight conditions. Red-eye reduction flash ( The red-eye reduction flash mode significantly reduces this phenomenon by emitting pre-flashes before firing the regular flash. Fill-in flash ( The flash fires regardless of the available light. Flash off ( The flash does not fire even in low light conditions.

    ADVANCED SHOOTING SEQUENTIAL SHOOTING This function allows you to take a rapid succession of still pictures by pressing and holding the shutter button (approximately 8 pictures at 1.3 frames per second by Sequential shooting in HQ mode). As you can choose the best picture from a series of sequential shots, you are recommended to use this mode when taking pictures of a moving subject.

Cancel the protection before erasing such pictures. Note • Once erased, pictures cannot be restored. Be careful not to accidentally erase pictures you want to keep.
  • Page 38 CARD SETUP – FORMATTING CARDS This function lets you format a card. Formatting prepares cards to receive data. Before using non-Olympus cards or cards which have been formatted on a PC, you must format them with this camera. All existing data, including protected pictures, are erased when the card is formatted.
  • Page 39 PLAYBACK ON A TV Use the AV cable provided with the camera to play back recorded images on your TV. Both a still picture and a movie can be played back. For a movie, the recorded sound is also played back along with the movie. Make sure that the TV and camera are turned off.

    PRINT RESERVATION /DIRECT PRINT WITH PRINT RESERVATION (DPOF) DPOF is short for Digital Print Order Format. DPOF is the format used to record automatic print information from digital cameras. If a card containing print reservation data is taken to a print shop that supports the DPOF format, the pictures can be printed according to the DPOF reservations.
  • Page 41 DIRECT PRINT (PictBridge) By connecting the camera to a PictBridge-compatible printer with the USB cable, you can print out recorded pictures directly without the use of a computer. PictBridge is the standard for connecting digital cameras and printers of different makers and printing out pictures directly. PRINT Prints the selected picture.

    DOWNLOADING PICTURES TO A COMPUTER By connecting the camera to a computer with the provided USB cable, images on a card can be transferred to the computer. Some OS’s (operating systems) may need a special setup before connecting to the camera for the first time.

    AC adapter An optional Olympus CAMEDIA-brand AC adapter allows you to power your digital camera from a common AC wall outlet. Be sure to use the specified AC adapter. An AC adapter is useful for time-consuming tasks such as downloading or printing out of images.
