To backstitch on a Janome ME 4023 sewing machine, follow these steps:

1. Turn on the machine and thread it properly with both upper and lower threads.

2. Place your fabric under the presser foot and lower the presser foot lever.

3. Start sewing by pressing the foot pedal lightly.

4. To backstitch, press and hold the reverse stitch lever (located at the front of the machine, usually marked with a U-turn arrow symbol).

5. While holding the reverse lever, the machine will sew in reverse. Sew 2–3 stitches backward to secure the beginning of the seam.

6. Release the reverse lever to continue sewing forward normally.

7. At the end of the seam, press and hold the reverse lever again to sew 2–3 stitches backward to lock the stitch.

8. Release the lever and stop sewing. Raise the presser foot and remove the fabric.

This secures the seam at both ends.
