Avoid the temptation

weight off t hepowered wheels, causing them tolose t raction.
Without the wheels tohold the tiller b ack, the tines w ill
attempt topropel the tiller b ackward,
towards the operator.
When c ultivating (breaking
upsurface soil around p lants to
destroy weeds, see Fig. 5-4), Adjust the tines t odigonly 1"
to2"deep. Using s hallow tilling depths helps p revent injury
totheplants whose r oots o ften grow close t othe surface.
Ifneeded, liftuponthe handlebars
slightly toprevent the
tines f rom digging t oodeeply. (Cultivating
onaregular basis
not o nly eliminates
weeds, italso loosens and aerates the
soil forbetter moisture absorption
and faster plant growth.)
Watering
thegarden area a few days p rior t otilling will m ake
tilling easier, as will l etting t he newly w orked soil set f ora
day ortwo before making afinal, deep t illing pass.
When f inished inone direction, make a second pass at
aright a ngle, as shown i nFig. 5-6. O verlap each pass for
best r esults (invery hard ground, itmay take three orfour
passes tothoroughly pulverize thesoil.)

If the garden size will not permit lengthwise and then crosswise
tilling, overlap the first passes by one-half a tiller width, followed
by successive passes at one-quarter
width. See Fig. 5-7.
