Due to this choracteristic of the higher pressure system, the use
of a 160
0
or 170
0
thermostat with alcohol or methanol base anti-
freeze solution may cause the coolant to boil under certain condi-
tions. Therefore, only the 151
0
thermostat should be used with these
types of
o
nti-freeze.
A noticeable
hissing or singing noise resulting
from the valve in the sealed cooling cap opening and closing may
be from engine overheating.
CHECKING COOLANT LEVEL-
It
should not be necessary to
check coolant
level
unless temperature gauge shows overheating,
a
nd then not until engine is stopped
a
nd allowed to cool to
normal.
CAUTION: Extreme
care must be
taken
when removing radiator pressure
cap while engine is
hot
because
relieving
the pressure will cause
the
cooling
system to
boil,
if alcohol is used for
anti·freeze,
with resultant
1088
of
water
or
anti-freeze
solution.
When removing filler
cap,
rotate cap toward left
ve
ry
slowly;
if
hissing of vapor is
encountered,
tighten cap immediately and wait
for system
to
c ool sufficiently
to
allow
removal
of
c ap. After
pressure
in
the
system has been
relieved,
turn cap more forcibly to left and remove. Turn c ap
all
the way
to
the
right when installing.
This
caution should not
be taken
lightly
since severe
injury
and fire
(if
alcohol
and
other inflammable
vapors are
present)
are possible if
the
radiator cap
is
removed while there is
pressure in the
cooling
system.
NOTE:
If
through som
e
mischance
the
water in the
radiator
should get
e
x-
tremely
low and the
engine very
hot,
let it
cool off
for ten
or fifteen minutes before
adding water, then add
it
slowly,
with
the
engine
running.
Cold water on hot
surfaces might crack
the
cylinder head or block
.
BLOWING
INSECTS FROM RADIATOR
CORE-
Excessive
a ccumulation of
insects may
block
the
ai
r
passa
ges of the radiator
core
a nd cause
overheating
of
the cooling system. This
condition
can
be easily corrected by
having
the
radiator air passa
ges
blown
out
with compressed
ai
r a
t your
Pontiac dealer. Or if
you
prefer,
you can
do
it
yourself
by using the garden
hose to force
wa ter
through
the radia tor
(from the
engine side to
the
g rille) the
reby
removing the insects from the front of
the core.
TIGHTENING COOLING SYSTEM CONNECTIONS AND
CYLINDER HEAD
BOLTS-
Before
insta
lling
anti-freeze in
the
fall
, be sure
that
all
the
cooling system connections and cylinder
head bolts
are properly
tightened
to prevent leaks.
This
is a minor
service
and costs very
little,
but it can ea
sily
save you the price of
a new charge
of anti-freeze later
in
the
winter.
