The process for updating your Enterprise Scanner agent is designed to keep your agent
up-to-date while taking the precautionary action of backing up your system before you
install updates. You can configure the agent to automatically download and install
updates according to the best times for your network.
The following table provides a checklist for scheduling updates:

Create a system backup prior to installing any firmware updates.
Tip: To ensure that you have a system backup before each automatic firmware update
installation, you can enable the Perform Full System Backup Before Installation option on
the Automatic Update Settings page.
Schedule automatic assessment content updates.
To allow time for updates to download, schedule an automatic update check at least one
hour before a firmware update or a system backup.
When you schedule firmware updates, consider that the agent may go offline for several
minutes during the installation process. Therefore, you should avoid times during open
scanning windows or during regular business hours.

The following table describes the stages of a typical, daily update process:
Stage Description
1 At 3:00 A.M., the agent checks the IBM ISS download center for updates.
2 The agent downloads assessment content and firmware updates.
3 The agent installs assessment content updates immediately.
4 At 4:05 A.M., the agent does the following:
• creates a system backup
• installs the firmware update
• reboots if necessary
