Using the surround back channel

• Default setting: SB ON
You can have the receiver automatically switch to Dolby
Digital EX or DTS-ES decoding for 6.1 encoded sources
(SB AUTO), or you can choose to listen to other kinds of
sources (for example, 5.1 encoded material) with 6.1
encoding (SB ON). With 5.1 encoded sources, a surround

Press SBch MODE repeatedly to cycle through the
surround back channel options.
Each press changes the setting as follows:
• SB AUTO
• SB ON
• SB OFF
Note
• If the Surround back speaker setting is set to SB ––,
you can only use the virtual surround back effect (see
below).
• You can't hear the surround back channel with DTS
96 kHz/24-bit sources.

back channel will be generated, but the material may
sound better in the 5.1 format for which it was originally
encoded, in which case you can simply switch the
surround back channel off (SB OFF).
The table below indicates when you will hear the
surround back channel when playing various kinds of
sources. (
=Sound plays through surround back
channel speaker.)

If you don't have a real surround back speaker
connected, you can use the Virtual Surround Back
feature to simulate one.
Note that this feature only works when the surround
channels are active and the Surround back speaker
setting is set to SB ––. See also Surround-back speaker
setting on page 34.
