OBD interface socket

The Onboard Diagnostic (OBD) inter-
face socket is located on the left of the
driver's side at the bottom of the instru-
m ent panel and under a cover.
The cover has the letters "OBD" on it.
The purpose of the OBD system is to
ensure proper operation of the em is-
sion control system for the vehicle's
lifetim e. The system monitors em ission-
related components and system s for
deterioration and m alfunction.
An illum inated lam p inform s you
of the need for service, not of
the need to stop the vehicle.
How ever, the system s should be
checked by your BM W center at the
earliest possible opportunity.
Under certain conditions, the indicator
w ill blink or flash. This indicates a rather
severe level of engine m isfire. When
this occurs, you should reduce speed
and consult the nearest BM W center as
soon as possible. Severe engine m isfire
over only a short period of tim e can
seriously dam age em ission control
com ponents, especially the catalytic
converter.

lamp for Canadian m odels.
When the filler cap is not properly
tightened, the OBD system can
detect the vapor leak and the indicator
w ill light up. If the filler cap is subse-
quently tightened, the indicator should
go out w ithin a few
days.<
