Relief Valve
_,WARNING
At the time of manufacture this water heater was provided
with a combination temperature-pressures reliefvalvecertified
by a nationallyrecognized testinglaboratory that maintains
mriodic inspection of production of listedequipmentor mate-
rials, as meeting the requirements for Relief Valvesand
AutomaticGasShutoffDevices for Hot Water Supply Systems,
and the latest edition of ANSI Z21.22 and the code require-
mentsof ASMF. If replaced, t he va_e must meet the reqube-

The valvemustbe markedwith a maximumset pressure not
to exceed the marked bydrostatic workingpressureof the
water heater (150 Ibsdso e in.) and a discharge c apacity not less
than the wnter hEnterinputrate as shEwn on thEmodel reting
plate. (Electricheaters- watts dividedby 1000 x 3415 equal
BTU/Hr.rate.)
Yourlocaljurisdictional authority, w hilemandating the useof a
temperature-pressore reliefvalvecomplying with ANSI 7.21.22
and ASNE, may requirea valvemodeldifferentfrom the one
fomisbedwiththe water heater,
Compliance with such_
requirements mustbe satlsEed by
the installeror end userof the v_ter heaterwith a locallyp.re-
scribed temperature-pressure relief valveinstalled in the desig-
nated opening in the water heater in placeof the factoryfur-
nished valve.
Forsafeoperationof the waterheater,the railefvalvemustnot
be removedfrom it'sdesignated opening or plugged.
The temperature-pressure re||el v_e, mustbe inst_ed directly
intothe fittingof the waterheaterde_gnated for the reliefvalve.
Position the valvedownward and provide tubingsothat anydis-
chargewill exit onlywithin 6 inchesabove,or at any distance
belowthe structuralfloor.Be certainthat no contactis made
with anyllveelectrical p art.The discharge o pening mustnot be
blocked or reduced in sizeunderanycircumstance_ Excessive
length, ever30 feet,or useof morethan fourelbows cancause
restriction andreduce the discharge c apacity of thevalve.
No valveor otherobstruction isto be placedbetween the relief
v_ve andthE tank.Do net connecttubingdirectly te dlscherge

ard to life,or propertydamage, t he relief valvemustbe allowed
to discharge w ater in quantities should circumstances demand. I f
the discharge p ipeisnot connected to a drainor othersuitable
means, t he water flowmaycause propertydamage.
The Discharge Pipe:
• Must not be smallerin sizethan the outlet pipesize of the
valve, o r haveanyreducing couplings o r other restHction_
• Mustnot beplugged or blocl_l.
• Mustbe of materiallistedfor hot waterdistribution.
• Must be installedso as to allowcompletedrainageof both
the temperature-pressure relief valve, and the discharge
pipe.
• Mustterminate at an adequatedrain.
• Mustnnt haveanyvalvebetwean the relief valveandtank.
AWARNING
ThE temperature-pressure relief valve must be manually
operated at leastonce a year. Caution shouldbe taken to
ensureth=e(I) no one is in front of or aroundthe ontle'd: of
the temperature-pressure relief valvedischarge line, and (2)
the water manually dischargedwill not causeany bodily
injury or property damage because the water may be
extremely h ot.
If after manually operatingthe valve, it feJlsto completely
reset and continues to releasewater, immediatelyclosethe
cold water inlet to the water heater, follow the draining
blatructiens,and replace the tempera|ore-pressure retief
