Storage
Enginesstoredover30 daysneed to be drainedof fuel
to preventdeteriorationand gumfrom formingin fuel
systemor on essentialcarburetorparts. If the gasolinein
yourenginedeterioratesduringstorage,you mayneed to
havethecarburetor,and otherfuel systemcomponents,
servicedor replaced.
1. Removeall fuel fromtank by runningengineuntil it
stopsfrom lack of fuel.
2. Changeoil. See Oil Changesection.
3. Removesparkplug and pour about 1/2an ounceof
engineoil intocylinder.Replacesparkplug and crank
slowlyto distributeoil.
4. Cleangrassand debrisfrom aroundengine,under
fingerguard,and under,aroundand behindmuffler.
Touchup anydamagedpaint,and coat other areas
that may rust with a lightfilm of oil.
5. Storein a clean,dryand well ventilatedarea away
fromany appliancethat operateswith a flameor
pilot light,such as a furnace,waterheater,or clothes
dryer.Alsoavoidanyarea with a spark producing
electricmotor,or wherepowertoolsare operated.
6. If possible,alsoavoidstorageareaswith high humid-
ity,becausethat promotesrust and corrosion.
7. Keepthe enginelevelin storage.Tiltingcan cause
fuelor oil leakage.
Removing
From Storage
1. Checkyour engineas describedin the Pre-Operation
Checksectionof this manual.
2. If thefuel was drainedduringstoragepreparation, f ill
thetank with fresh gasoline.If you keepa container
of gasolinefor refueling,makecertain itcontainsonly
freshfuel. Gasolineoxidizesand deterioratesover
time,causinghard starting.
3. If thecylinderwas coatedwith oil duringstorage
preparation, t he enginewill smokebriefly at startup.
This is normal.
