MOWER BLADES
Mowerbladesare sharp.
• When working near blades, wear
heavyleather glovesor wrap blades in
thick rags to protectyourself from the
sharpedges.
• Wear eye protection when sharpening
blades.
Examinemower bladesbeforeoperation.
Forefficient mowing, cutting edgesof
bladesshould alwaysbe kept sharp.
Checkfor bladewear or damage. See
Figure5-16. Replace a severelyworn or
damagedblade with a new one.
To Inspect Blades:
1. Stopengine,wait for all parts to
stopmoving,and disconnect s park
plug wire.
2. Tip mower on rear wheelsby follow-
ing instructions "Tipping Mower For
Service"in this Sectionof Manual.
To RemoveBlades:
Removebolt (Figure5-18) and
washer(s). Removemower blade.
To SharpenBlades:
Grind or file the same amount from each
bladeend to maintain bladebalance. An
unbalancedmower blade producesex-
cessivevibration and may damagespin-
dle bearings.Sharpencutting edge
straight across, parallelto rearedge of
mower blade.See Figure5-16. After
sharpening,blade balancemust be
checked.

ENINGSERVICES ORYOURAUTHO-
RIZEDDEALER AREEQUIPPED TO
SHARPEN MOWERBLADESSAFELY.
To Install Blades:
Bladesmust be installed perpendicular
to each other (seeFigure5-17).
Install mower bladeas shown in Figure
5-18 with flat side down. Install washer
on bolt. Tighten bolts to a torque value
of 35 ft. Ibs. (47 Nm).
NOTE: If top bolt is removed,reinstall
using LOCTITE #242 threadsealant.
