12cmdisc
A disc with a diameter of 12cm. You cannot
use 12cm discs with this DVD Handycam.
5.1chsurround sound
A system that phtvs back sound on 6
speakers, 3at the front (lelL right and center)
and 2 at the rear (right and lel}) with an
additional low-pass subwool_w counted as a
0.1 channel lbr frequencies of 120Hz or
lower. The subwoofcr isonly counted as 0. I
channel because its playback band is narrow.
The all-round audio reproduction is more
realistic than stereo, which only reproduces
movement of sound from side to side.
I 8cmdisc
A disc with a diameter of 8cm. You can use
8cm discs with DVD Handycam.

The titk' (name) given to a recorded disc.

Dolby Digital
An audio encoding (compression) system
developed by Dolby Laboratories Inc.
Sound can be recorded in various l_rmats,
from 5. lch surround to 2ch stereo or
monaural audio.

Dolby Digital 5.1 Creator
Sound compression technology developed
by Dolby Laboratories Inc. which
coml)resses audio efficiently while
preserving high sound quality. It enables
recording of 5.1ch surround sound while
using disc space more efficiently. Discs
created by Dolby Digital 5.1 Creator can be
played back on a DVD recorder or device
compatible with the disc on DVD
Handycam. lfyou own a 5. Ich system (such
as a home theater system) you can enjoy a
powerful sound.
D0uble-sided disc
Disc that can be recorded on both sides.
DVDmenu
A menu screen that enables you to select a
particular scene l¥om a disc being played

DVD-R
A DVD format that does not enabh., re-
recording. It is mostly used for su'dng data
that does not need to be edited. It is

Before finalizing, you can additionally
record onto the disc's free space. Once the
disc is finalized, however, you cannot record
onto it even if it has some free space left.
DVD-RW
A rc-rccordable DVD format. You can
choose from two kinds of recording mode:
VIDEO mode, which stresses high playback
compatibility with other DVD devices, and
VR mode, which enables various editing
with DVD Handycam alker recording.
DVD+RW
A re-recordabh: DVD format providing high
playback compatibility with other DVD
devices. Discs do not require finalizing so
they can be re-recorded anytime.
Finalizing
The process of making discs recorded on
DVD Handycam compatible for playback
on other DVD de'_ices. DVD-R/DVD-RW
discs must be finalized before being played
on another DVD device.
Formatting
The process of deleting all recorded movies
from a disc and restoring its original storage
capacity so that it can be rerccorded onto.
JPEG
JPEG stands _r Joint Photographic Experts
Group, a still image data coml)ression (data
capacity reduction) standard. DVD
Handycam records still images in JPEG
format.
