Sustainable Mobility

Opel is committed to energy diversity
Opel continues to focus on environmentally compatible vehicles.
The company sees further potential in the existing technologies
for improvements in the CO
balance sheet and in the fuel
2
consumption, and is working intensively on more efficient
gasoline and diesel engines. In addition to this, over the next five
years Opel will invest around one billion euros in the development
of alternative engine technologies.
Apart from the Ampera, which will be the first extended-range
electric vehicle to come to market in Europe, other electric
vehicles are under development. Pure battery-operated cars
which are ideal for shorter distances as well as hydrogen fuel cell
vehicles like the HydroGen4 are being researched. Opel calls its
diverse electric vehicle strategy "e-mobility unlimited".

Further development of conventional propulsion systems
Existing technologies offer considerable potential to further
improve CO
emissions and fuel consumption without significantly
2
restricting driving performance. This can be achieved, for example,
by reducing internal friction in the engine, by using new materials
and by surface processing. In addition to this, Opel engineers
are working on common-rail diesel engines with high injection
pressures, cam-phase technology, optimizing transmission
stepping, reducing weight, and on aerodynamic fine-tuning.
One of the focal points here is the rightsizing strategy, where
naturally-aspirated engines with relatively large displacements are
replaced by turbocharged engines with a smaller displacement.
Opel ecoFLEX models
ecoFLEX is the name given by Opel to those variants in a model
series which are especially low in consumption without making
any compromises in terms of driving fun or safety. Opel ecoFLEX
models are available with engines for diesel, gasoline, LPG
(Liquefied Petroleum Gas) or CNG (Compressed Natural Gas).
The Opel ecoFLEX family: even greater fuel-efficiency
thanks to Start/Stop technology
The Opel Corsa 1.3 CDTI ecoFLEX underlines the Opel philosophy
of building environmentally friendly cars at affordable prices
without any compromises in driving fun. In connection with the
Start/Stop system the consumption of this especially efficient
Corsa in city driving is reduced by 8.7 percent. On average it
consumes 3.5 liters diesel per 100 km and emits just 94 g/km CO
With the successive introduction of Start/Stop technology
throughout the model range, Opel has taken another major step
towards lowering fuel consumption and emissions. Start/Stop
technology is now available in the Agila, Corsa and Astra. The
Meriva, Zafira and Insignia will follow this year.
Reduction of fuel consumption using the example
of the 160 hp Insignia ecoFLEX
The ecoFLEX version of the Opel Insignia perfectly represents
the ecoFLEX philosophy, combining a dynamic driving experience
with low emissions. The 118kW/160 hp two-liter turbo diesel
provides powerful propulsion. At the same time the sedan only
emits 129 grams of CO
12
, equivalent to 4.9 l/100km.
