GUIDE BAR AND CHAIN O IL
The bar a nd chain r equire lubrication.
The chain o iler p rovides continuous
lubrication
tothe chain a nd guide b ar.
Be sure tofillthe bar o iltank when y ou
fillthe fuel tank (Capacity
=6.8 fl.oz.).
Lack o foilwill q uickly ruin thebar a nd
chain. Too little oil w ill c ause overheat-
ing shown bysmoke coming from the
chain a nd/or discoloration
ofthebar.

werecommend
you use Craftsman
chain s aw bar o il. I fCraftsman
bar o il
isnot a vailable,
you may use agood
grade S AE 30oil u ntil you are able to
obtain C raftsman
brand. The oiloutput
isautomatically
metered during o pera-
tion. Your saw will u se approximately
one tank ofbar o il f orevery tank offuel
mix. Always fillbar o il t ank when y ou
fillthe fuel tank.
FUELING
ENGINE
_WARNIN_I: R emove fuel cap
slowly when r efueling.
This engine iscertified
tooperate onun-
leaded gasoline.
Before operation,
gaso-
line must bemixed with agood q uality
synthetic
2-cycle air-cooled
engine oil.
We recommend
Craftsman
brand s yn-
thetic oil. M ix gasoline
and oil a taratio
of40:1. A40:1 ratio isobtained
bymix-
ing 3.2 ounces ofoil w ith 1gallon ofun-
leaded gasoline.
Included
with this saw
isa3.2 ounce c ontainer
ofoil.Pour the
entire contents
ofthis container
into 1
gallon ofgasoline
toachieve the proper
fuel mixture.
DO NOT U SE automotive
oil o rboat oil.
These o ils will c ause e ngine damage.
When m ixing fuel follow t heinstruc-
tions p rinted onthe oilcontainer.
Once o il i sadded t othe gasoline,
shake c ontainer momentarily
toassure
that t he fuel i sthoroughly
mixed. Al-
ways r ead and follow t he safety r ules
relating tofuel b efore fueling your u nit.
IMPORTANT
Experience
indicates
that a lcohol
blended
fuels ( called gasohol orusing
ethanol ormethanol)
can attract mois-
ture which l eads toseparation
and
formation
ofacids d uring storage.
Acidic
gas can damage the fuel system o fan
engine while i nstorage.
Toavoid e ngine problems,
the fuel sys-
tem should beemptied
before storage
for30days o rlonger. Drain the gas
tank, start the engine and letitrun until
the fuel lines a nd carburetor
are empty.
Use fresh f uel next season. See STOR-
AGE i nstructions
for a dditional
informa-
tion. Never use engine orcarburetor
cleaner products
inthe fuel tank orper-
manent damage may occur.

CHAIN B RAKE
Ensure chain b rake i sdisengaged
by
pulling the front h and g uard b ack t o-
ward t he front h andle asfaraspos-
sible. The chain b rake m ust bedisen-
gaged before cutting with the saw.
,_WARNING:
The chain must not
move when the engine runs at idle
speed.
If the chain moves at idle
speed, refer to CARBURETOR ADJUST-
MENT within this manual.
Avoid con-
tact with the muffler.
A hot muffler can
cause serious burns.
STOPPING
YOUR
ENGINE
• Move ON/STOP switch to the STOP
position.
STARTING
POSITION
To start the engine, hold the saw firmly
on the ground as illustrated
below.
Make sure the chain is free to turn
without contacting
any object.
