ARNING:When removingcutting
bladefor sharpeningor replacement,
protectyour hands with a pairof heavy
glovesor use a heavy rag to hold blade.
1. Disconnectsparkplug wirefrom spark plug.Turn
moweron itsside makingsurethat the air filter and
the carburetorare up.
2. Removebolt, blade bell support,blade,and blade
adapterfrom the enginecrankshaft,Figure5-3.
NOTE:Whenremovingthe blade,bladeadapter,etc., be
carefulnot to removeor lose parts aboveit associated
with the enginepulley.
3. The bladecan be sharpenedwith a fileor on a grind-
ingwheel.Do notattemptto sharpenthe blade while
it isstill on the mower.Whensharpeningblade,follow
originalangle of grind.Grindcuttingedgesequallyto
keepblade balanced.
4. Removebladefrom the adapterfor testingbalance.
Balancethe blade on a round shaftscrewdriver to
check. Removemetalfromthe heavysideuntil it
balancesevenly.

ARNING:An unbalanced blade
will causeexcessivevibration
when
rotatingat high speeds,it may cause
damage to mower,and could break
causingpersonalinjury.
5. Lubricatetheenginecrankshaftand the innersurface
of the blade adapterwith lightoil. Slide the blade
adapteronto theengine crankshaft.Placethe blade
on theadaptersuchthat theside of the blade marked
"Bottom"(or with part number)facesthe groundwhen
the mowerisin the operatingposition.Makesurethat
blade is alignedand seatedon bladeadapterflanges.
6. Placeblade bell supporton the blade.Align notches
on the bladebell supportwith small holesin blade.
Replacehex boltand tightenhex boltto torque: 450
in.Ibs.rain.,600 in.Ibs.max.
Toensuresafeoperationof yourmower,periodically
checkthe blade boltfor correcttorque.
Belt Care
1. Disconnectthe sparkplug wireand groundit against
the engine.
2. Drainthe fueltank or placea pieceof plasticbeneath
the cap to preventgasolineleakage.
3. Tip moweron its side(air cleanerside of engineup).
4. Removeblade,adapter,and relatedhardwareas
instructedunder"BladeCare"above.
5. Loosenself-tappingscrewthat securesdeck baffleto
the deck, Figure5-4.

Maintaining

the cutting blade
for sharpening or

when sliding the belt
around it, protect
your hands with a
