Power and thermal technologies

HP engineers have developed a robust set of power and thermal technologies, and components to
manage power within the ProLiant 300-series G6 servers. The following technologies improve power
efficiency throughout the power delivery chain:

• Efficient power delivery

• Improved thermal sensors and fan control
• Dynamic Power Capping
• Phase shedding
• Managing processor technologies
• Managing memory technologies
• Managing I/O technologies
• Power profiles
Administrators can disable certain components and capabilities within the 300-series G6 servers or
reduce capabilities to bring the components to a lower power state.
Efficient power delivery
ProLiant G6 servers use common slot "right-size" power supplies and highly efficient DC power
regulators to deliver significantly higher power efficiencies.

Common slot power supplies

The HP G6 common slot power strategy provides power supply commonality across ProLiant G6
server lines. HP reduced the number of power supply designs, which reduces the number of spares
the customer must keep in the data center.
By incorporating "right-sizing" and High Efficiency mode (discussed in the following section), these
power supplies have achieved efficiency ratings of up to 92 percent, and they meet Climate Savers
Gold requirements.

• 48Vdc 1200W
The power loading efficiency curve for the 750 W power supply shown in Figure 5 illustrates the high
levels of power efficiency achieved by power supplies used in the ProLiant G6 servers.
