    Abstract Visualization and Acceleration are two key segments of the compute-intensive applications market today. This technology brief provides an overview of Visualization and Acceleration technologies and products for industry-standard servers and their primary applications areas. It describes the features that are being designed into HP ProLiant servers to support Acceleration and Visualization products, and it describes the ongoing qualification and testing efforts undertaken at HP to ensure that these products provide robust and optimized solutions when used with HP ProLiant servers.

    Acceleration products Graphics processing units GPU’s were originally developed to deliver the graphics rendering capabilities used in Visualization applications. Computer scientists and the companies that produced GPUs soon realized that the large- scale parallel computing capability of GPUs could be harnessed to run general purpose computational applications, leading to the development of GPGPUs.

Many accelerator cards use 100 to 300 watts of power, which is significantly greater than the 75 watts of power that is supported through the PCIe x16 connector. Fortunately, the PCIe specification defines a method for supplying additional power to cards using auxiliary power connectors on the system motherboard that connect to the accelerator cards using special cables.

    Conclusion Application areas using visualization and acceleration technologies are a very focused but growing part of the market for industry-standard servers. HP is committed to serving this market by continuing to engineer support for these technologies into its product designs. HP also maintains the ongoing SCI Accelerator Program to qualify key acceleration and visualization products on HP ProLiant servers.
