Planning and analysis

During the Planning and Analysis phase, the system administrator must understand the hardware,

software, and performance characteristics of the current systems. The inventory reports in HP SIM

show detailed information about the hardware in use; PMP indicates the historical performance of

CPU, memory; and input and output and HP Server Automation shows what software is installed on

the systems. Based on this data, the system administrator can develop a consolidation plan.

HP SIM capabilities include: Health Monitoring, Event Notification, Distributed Task Execution, and

Inventory. In this example, the company uses HP SIM to gather hardware inventory information.

Standard and custom inventory reports show data such as server model, operating system, processor

type and speed, amount and type of memory, network interfaces, logical drive space usage, and

physical drive information (Figure 10). These reports help the system administrator understand the

current characteristics of the systems.
