One server blade in the enclosure is part of a performance sensitive, mission-critical Oracle RAC
database. Not finding an obvious cause for the excessive temperature, the administrator decides to
use an available server blade in another enclosure to add a server to the database cluster to ensure
adequate performance and redundancy while the administrator investigates the problem.
This RAC cluster is part of a horizontally scalable application and was configured with additional
database instances, which are turned off during normal operations. The additional database
instances were created, configured, and tested in advance on servers configured using Virtual
Connect server blade profiles, specifying LAN and SAN connectivity for each server blade.

Virtual Connect Enterprise Manager

The use of VCEM server connection profiles makes it easy for you to move or repurpose servers to
meet changing workloads, to recover failed server hardware to a spare server, or perform more
efficient systems maintenance. The VCEM application (Figure 8) builds on underlying HP SIM services,
Virtual Connect hardware, and the Onboard Administrator (OA) in each enclosure to discover and
centrally manage multiple BladeSystem enclosures that use Virtual Connect. These enclosures are
referred to as Virtual Connect Domains. VCEM also provides a central database to control MAC and
WWN assignments for LANs and SANs, which eliminates potential address conflicts.
