Ch e ck ing and filling
current list of oils (manufacturers , brand
names etc.) that conform to Audi oi l standard
VW 502 00 (vehicles with gasoline engine) or
VW 507 00 (vehicles with diesel engine).
Chang ing t he eng ine oil
The engine oil and oil filter must be changed
according t o the m ileage (ki lomete rs) and
time inte rvals specified in your vehicle's War-
ranty & Maintenance booklet . Do not exceed
these intervals - harmful deposits from old
engine oil can reduce engine performance and
can lead to expensive engine repairs .
Changing the oil at the recommended inte r-
vals is so very important because the lubricat-
ing properties of oi l decrease grad ually during
norma l vehicle use. If you are not sure when
you have your oil changed, ask your author-
ized Audi Service Advisor .
Under some circumstances the engine oil
should even be changed more frequently .
Change oil more often if you drive mostly
short distances, operate the vehicle in dusty
areas or mostly under stop-and-go traffic con-
ditions, or when you use your vehicle where
temperatures stay below freezing point fo r
long periods.
Detergent add it ives in the oil w ill make fresh
oil look dark after the engine has been run-
ning fo r a short time. This is norma l and is not
a reason to change the oil more often than
recommended.
Damag e or malfun ctio ns due to lack of
maint e nance
It is essential that you change your oil at the
recommended intervals using only engine oil
that complies with Audi oil standard
VW 502 00 (vehicles wit h gasol ine engine) or
VW 507 00 (vehicles with diesel engine) . Your
Limited New Vehicle Warranty does not cover
damage or ma lf unctions due to failure to fol-
low recommended maintenance and use re-
qu irements as set forth in the Audi Owner's
Manual and War ranty
&
Maintenance book let.
Your dealer will have t o deny warranty cover-
age unless you present to the dealer proof in
the form of Service or Repair Orders that all
scheduled maintenance was performed in a
t imely manner.
Engine oil consumption
The engine in your vehicle depends on on ade-
quate amount of oil to lubricate and cool oil
of its moving ports.
In order to provide effective lubrication and
cooling of interna l engine components, all in-
ternal combust ion engines consume a certain
amount of oil. Oil consumpt ion varies from
engine t o engine and may change sign ificantly
over the life of the engine. Typically, engines
with a specified break- in period (see
¢ page 201)
consume more oil during the
break-in period t han they consume afte r oil
consumption has stabilized.
Under normal cond it ions, the rate of oil con-
sumption depends on the quality and viscosity
of the oil , the RPM (revol ut ions per minute) at
which the engine is operat ed, the ambient
temperature and road conditions . Furt her fac-
tors are the amount of oil dilution from water
condensation or fue l residue and the oxida-
tion level of the oil. As any engine is subject to
wear as mileage builds up, the oil consump-
t ion may increase over t ime until replacement
of worn components may become necessary.
With all these variab les coming into play, no
standard rate of oil consumpt ion can be es-
tablished or specified . There is no alternative
to regular and frequent checking of the oil lev-
el, see
Note .
