System and Power Connections
TheHK 3470 is designedfor flexible usewith
externalcontrol componentsand powerampli-
fiers.These connections are easyto makedur-
ing an initial installation,or at a later date
shouldyou chooseto upgradeyoursystem,
Remote Control Extension
If the receiveris placedbehinda solid or
smokedglasscabinet doo_, t he obstructionmay
preventthe remotesensorfrom receivingcom-
mands In this event,an optional remote sensor
may be used Connectthe output of the remote
sensorto the Remote IR In]ack 0,
If othercomponentsarealso preventedfrom
receivingremote commands, o nly one sensoris
needed,Theymay usethis unit's sensoror a
remoteeye by runninga connection from the
Remote IR Out jack 0 to the RemoteIn]ack
on HarmanKardonor othercompatibleequip-
ment
External Audio Power Amplifier
Connections
If desired, a n optional,externalamplifiermay
be usedin placeof the HK 3470'sinternal
power ampiifie_
Toconnectan externalpower amplifiei,first
removethe Pre-Out/Main-ln Jumper Pins
_) that connectthe Preamp Out _ and
Main In _ jacks on the rear panel Keepthe
jumpers in a safe placeshouldthey be needed
at a latertime,
Usinghigh-qualityaudio interconnectcables,
connectthe Preamp Out jacks _ to the input
jacks on your power amplifie_Makecertainto
matchthe right output to the right input and
the left output to the left input,
Notethat when an externalpower amplifieris
used,no specialadjustmentsare requiredAll
volumeand othercontrol adjustmentsare
made usingthe standardfront panelor remote
controls,
If you wish to use externalprocessing equip-
ment, suchas an equalizer, y ou may connect
the deviceto the preamp-outand maindnjacks
by removingthe Preamp-Out/Main-ln
Jumper Pins _) and connecting the Preamp
Out _)]acks to the inputsof the external
device,andthe outputsof the deviceto the
Main In _ jacks,
Alternatively, y ou may connectthe external
deviceto the TapeMonitor Loop Connectthe
Tape Monitor Record/Out jacks _) to the

AC Power Connections
TheAccessory Outlets 1_ receivepower as
long astile receiveris turned on, Powerto
theseoutlets is removedwhen the unit is in the
Standbymode,or when the Main Power
Switch []
is in the "OFF" position
Speaker Placement
Foroptimal listeningenjoyment,andfor sound-
field reproductionthat best re-creates the origi-
nal recording,it is good practiceto placethe
speakerssothat they form a trianglewith the
speakersat the front of the room, andthe pre-
ferred listeningspot at the third point of the tri-
angle.Thedistancebetweeneachspeakerand
the listenershouldbe identical
Forexample,if the speakersare 10 feet from
one another,eachof the speakersshouldopti-
mally be placedsothat they are also 10 feet
from the listener.It is alsodesirableto place
speakerssothat their tweeters,or high-
frequencydrivers,areaimed at earheight
when you areseatedin the listeningposition

A good slatting point tur speaker placement is to make the

correctlocation Ideally,pansfrom left to right

Theplacementof subwoofersshouldbe done
as suggestedin the manufacturer's instructions,
In general,subwoofersoften producebest
resultswhen they are placedin the cornerof a
room,along the samewall as the speakers, b ut
optimal placement w ill varywidely depending
on roomsize,the subwoofertype and the
placementof rugsand furniturein a room It
may be helpfulto temporarilypositionthe sub-
woofer in the usuallisteningposition,then
walk aroundthe roomwhile programmaterial
is playinguntil the bassreproductionsounds
best to your ears Thatlocation is likelyto be
the optimum positionfor the subwoofe_
