Read all safety warnings and all instructions. Failure to follow the warnings and instructions may result in electric shock, fire and/or serious injury.

Save all warnings and instructions for future reference. The term "power tool" in the warnings refers to your mainsoperated (corded) power tool or battery-operated (cordless) power tool.

WORK AREA SAFETY

  • Keep work area clean and well lit. Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents.
  • Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases or dust. Power tools create sparks which may ignite the dust or fumes.
  • Keep children and bystanders away while operating a power tool. Distractions can cause you to lose control.

ELECTRICAL SAFETY

  • shock hazard Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way. Do not use any adapter plugs with earthed (grounded) power tools. Unmodified plugs and matching outlets will reduce risk of electric shock.
  • shock hazard Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces such as pipes, radiators, ranges and refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is earthed or grounded.
  • shock hazard Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of electric shock.
  • shock hazard Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord for carrying, pulling or unplugging the power tool. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges or moving parts. Damaged or entangled cords increase the risk of electric shock.
  • shock hazard When operating a power tool outdoors, use an extension cord suitable for outdoor use. Use of a cord suitable for outdoor use reduces the risk of electric shock.
  • shock hazard If operating a power tool in a damp location is unavoidable, use a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) protected supply. Use of a GFCI reduces the risk of electric shock.
  • Use this product only with batteries and chargers listed in tool/appliance/battery pack/charger correlation supplement 987000-432.

PERSONAL SAFETY

  • Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating a power tool. Do not use a power tool while you are tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. A moment of inattention while operating power tools may result in serious personal injury.
  • Use personal protective equipment. Always wear eye protection. Protective equipment such as dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat, or hearing protection used for appropriate conditions will reduce personal injuries.
  • Prevent unintentional starting. Ensure the switch is in the off-position before connecting to power source and/or battery pack, picking up or carrying the tool. Carrying power tools with your finger on the switch or energising power tools that have the switch on invites accidents.
  • Remove any adjusting key or wrench before turning the power tool on. A wrench or a key left attached to a rotating part of the power tool may result in personal injury.
  • Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. This enables better control of the power tool in unexpected situations.
  • Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewellery. Keep your hair, clothing and gloves away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewellery or long hair can be caught in moving parts.

CHUCK ADAPTOR

  1. Non-SDS-Plus bit (not included)
  2. Chuck adaptor (not included)
  3. SDS-Plus chuck

For drilling in metal, wood, and plastic with non-SDS Plus drill bits, a chuck adaptor may be used.

NOTE: Use with Rotational Drilling Mode only. Use of Rotary Hammer mode will damage the tool's mechanism when used for fastening or drilling with non-SDS-Plus bits.

BREAK-IN AND COLD STARTS

A new hammer drill may require up to five hours of operation for break-in. When stored for long periods or in low temperatures, a warm-up period of a few seconds to a couple of minutes may be required in hammer mode.

MODE SELECTOR

MODE SELECTOR

The mode selector gives the operator two options.

Rotary Hammer Mode
Hammering action plus drill bit rotation.
Use for hammer drilling.
Rotational Drilling Mode
Drill bit rotation only; no hammering action. Use for drilling applications.

NOTE: If the product has not been operated recently, the mode selector may be difficult to turn. If you cannot change modes, turn the tool on and allow it to run for a few seconds. This should free the gears and allow you to change modes normally.

DRILLING

  • Check the direction of rotation selector for the correct setting (forward or reverse).
  • Secure the workpiece in a vise or with clamps to keep it from turning as the bit rotates.
  • Hold the tool firmly and place the bit at the starting point of the workpiece.

Do not drive a screw where there is likely to be hidden wiring behind the surface. Contact with a "live" wire will make exposed metal parts of the tool "live" and possibly shock the operator. If you must drive a screw where hidden wire may be present, always hold tool by insulated gripping surfaces (handle) when performing the operation to prevent a shock to the operator.

  • Depress the switch trigger to start the tool.
  • Move the bit into the workpiece, applying only enough pressure to keep the bit cutting. Do not force the tool or apply side pressure to elongate a hole. Let the tool do the work.

Be prepared for binding at bit breakthrough. When these situations occur, the tool has a tendency to grab and kick opposite to the direction of rotation and could cause loss of control when breaking through material. If not prepared, this loss of control can result in possible serious injury.

  • When drilling hard, smooth surfaces, use a center punch to mark the desired hole location. This will prevent the bit from slipping off-center as the hole is started.
  • If the bit jams in the workpiece or if the tool stalls, stop the tool immediately. Remove the bit from the workpiece and determine the reason for jamming.

NOTE: This tool has an electric brake. When the switch trigger is released, the chuck stops turning. When the brake is functioning properly, sparks will be visible through the vent slots on the housing. This is normal and is the action of the brake.

NOTICE:
During extended periods of use, it is possible that lubrication may leak from the gearbox. This is a normal occurrence and does not indicate a problem with the tool. Avoid placing the tool on an unprotected surface to avoid possible property damage.

MASONRY DRILLING

MASONRY DRILLING
For maximum performance, use carbide-tipped masonry impact bits or designated hammer drill bits when drilling holes in brick, tile, concrete, etc.

  • Select Rotary Hammer Mode.
  • Apply light pressure at medium speed for best results in brick.
  • Apply additional pressure for hard materials such as concrete.
  • When drilling holes in tile, practice on a scrap piece to determine the best speed and pressure. Begin drilling at a very low speed to prevent the bit from slipping off the starting point.

WOOD, METAL, AND STEEL DRILLING

For maximum performance, use high speed steel bits for wood or metal drilling. Select Rotational Drilling Mode. Begin drilling at a very low speed to prevent the bit from slipping off the starting point.

NOTICE:
When using the tool, do not apply too much pressure. Too much pressure will place unnecessary load on the motor.

WOOD DRILLING

  • SelectRotational Drilling Mode.
  • Increase the speed as the drill bit bites into the material.
  • When drilling through holes, place a block of wood behind the workpiece to prevent ragged or splintered edges on the back side of the hole.

METAL AND STEEL DRILLING

  • Select Rotational Drilling Mode.
  • Use a light oil on the drill bit to keep it from overheating. The oil will prolong the life of the bit and increase the drilling action.
  • Maintain a speed and pressure which allows cutting without overheating the bit. Applying too much pressure will:
    • Overheat the drill;
    • Wear the bearings;
    • Bend or burn bits; and
    • Produce off-center or irregular-shaped holes.
  • When drilling large holes in metal, start with a small bit, then finish with a larger bit.
