If the end mill has centers, these can be used for concentric holding. If not, the tool is generally held by a collet at the shank end with a tooth rest set in a specific relation to the wheel and tool center. This tooth/tool rest is usually placed directly at the point of contact between the wheel and the cutter, minimizing vibration during the grinding process. 4-Flute Center Cutting End MIll www.cuttermasters.com - Toll Free (800) 417 2171 Page 13...
  • Page 14 One caution to be observed if single clearance is used, is that a very light finishing grind must be taken because of the longer line of contact between the wheel and the end mill. Heavy finishing cuts invite burning, cause accuracy to be sacrificed and can cause the diameter to be reduced more than necessary. Test Tools A grinding project is like all other operations in a machine shop, in that it may be unadvisable to take trial cuts on a finish product. For this reason it is good to have set up or test cutting tools kept aside to test angles and finishes prior to grinding the final product. www.cuttermasters.com - Toll Free (800) 417 2171 Page 14...

Every material has an endurance limit. When a carbide cutter is too “fatigued” it will show in chipping and flaking at the cutting edges. This will be more apparent in the harder materials such as carbide. If the edges and the flute (rake) face are badly chipped, the cutter should be re-fluted to get into www.cuttermasters.com - Toll Free (800) 417 2171 Page 15...

Remove Quill and Clean with Acetone 4. Check Stylus Height. The stylus height should be set to the air bearing fixture (tool) center height. If it needs to be reset to this height, use the provided 3/8 center finder by mounting it in the air bearing with a 3/8” collet. The face points down, parallel with the x table top face. Raise the stylus to touch the face of the center finder and lock the stylus nut to set. www.cuttermasters.com - Toll Free (800) 417 2171 Page 17...
