Use the LCD Interface
You can use the LCD interface and buttons for different operations.
The XTM 1500 Series device can operate in three modes:
Normal Mode
This is the normal operating mode for the device. The XTM 1500 Series device boots from the
Fireware XTM OS and operates with the rules set in the configuration file you have saved to the
device.
Safe Mode
You can use safe mode to get access to an XTM 1500 Series device when you cannot connect to the
device in normal mode. You can also use safe mode to reset device passphrases when you do not
know or have forgotten them. To recover the device when you start it in safe mode, you must use the
WSM Quick Setup Wizard or the Web Setup Wizard.
You must start the XTM 1500 Series device in safe mode to use the Quick Setup Wizards. In safe mode,
the device runs Fireware XTM and is configured with factory-default IP addresses. When you put the
device in safe mode, the license files and certificates are saved. You can then use the saved files if you
reconfigure a device with one of the setup wizards.
To start an XTM 1500 Series device in safe mode, press and hold the down arrow button on the device
front panel when you power on the device. Hold down the button until "Safe Mode Starting" appears
on the LCD screen. When the device is in safe mode, the model number followed by the word "Safe"
appears on the LCD screen and the factory default IP address for Eth1 is 10.0.1.1/24.
Recovery Mode
You can start your WatchGuard XTM device in recovery mode if you want the WSM Quick Setup
Wizard to force a Fireware XTM v11.x OS installation regardless of the version that is currently
installed. When you start the device in recovery mode, the Quick Setup Wizard installs a new OS
image and removes all existing configuration settings and feature keys.
To start an XTM 1500 Series device in recovery mode, press and hold the up arrow button on the
device front panel when you power on the device. Hold down the button until "Recovery Mode
starting" appears on the LCD screen. In recovery mode, the Eth1 interface uses the factory default IP
address 10.0.1.1/24, and the device is ready to be discovered by the WSM Quick Setup Wizard.
