8-13. Choosing the Aspect Ratio
M odes for view ing high-definition content (16:9) W HEN OUTPUT FORM AT IS 480i
OR 480p M ODE :
Letter Box
Use for a picture w ith an original 16:9 aspect ratio (in a w ide format). Letterbox mode w ill
shrink the picture to fill the screen, w ith black/ gray (or blank) bars appearing at the top and
bottom of the screen.
Cropped
Use for a picture filling the entire screen by cropping (removing) the left and right portions of
the picture.
Squeezed
Use for a full picture filling the entire screen w ith no black/ gray bars. The picture in a 16:9
format w ill be horizontally adjusted or squeezed to fit the 4:3 ratio monitor. This setting can
also be useful w hen used w ith 16:9 aspect ratio monitors or w ith 4:3 aspect ratio monitors
that have a " 16:9 enhancement" feature.
M odes for view ing standard definition content (4:3) W HEN OUTPUT FORM AT IS
720p OR 1080i M ODE :
Normal
Use for a picture w ith an original 4:3 aspect ratio on your 16:9 monitor, w ith black/ gray bars
appearing at the left and right sides.
W ide
Use for a picture adjusted horizontally (in a linear proportion) to fill the entire screen.
Panorama
Use to adjust a picture in a non-linear proportion (more at both sides) to create a spectacular
view.
Zoom
Use w hen you w ant to fill the entire screen w ith no black/ gray bars appearing. The image
w ill be altered both horizontally (stretched) and vertically (cropped). The top and bottom por-
tions of the picture w ill be cut.
CINE-Zoom
Use to adjust zooming. The picture can be adjusted in multiple steps to provide the best dis-
play for many program formats on your display device.

The correct aspect ratio for programming in the 480i and 480p formats from the Video
1/ 2, S-Video and Component outputs can be automatically set by Sony Hi-Scan™ TVs
w hen using the TV's 16:9 Enhanced feature (ID1).
