xSeries 225 Type 8649: User's Guide
IBM X-Architecture technology combines proven, innovative IBM designs to make
your Intel-processor-based server powerful, scalable, and reliable. X-Architecture
design includes Chipkill
drives, and Predictive Failure Analysis
Your server supports up to two Intel Xeon microprocessors. It comes with at least
one microprocessor installed; if it comes with only one microprocessor, you can
install an additional microprocessor to enhance performance and provide SMP
capability.
Some server models support up to six 25.4-mm (1-inch) slim-high, 3.5-inch
hot-swap hard disk drives in the hot-swap bays. With the hot-swap feature, you
can add, remove, or replace hard disk drives without turning off the server.
Some models of the server come with two 514-watt hot-swap power supplies,
which provide redundant power for many server configurations. If the average
load on your server is less than 514-watt and a problem occurs with one of the
power supplies, the other power supply can handle the load.
Your server supports up to 8 GB of system memory. The memory controller
provides error correcting code (ECC) support for up to four industry-standard,
133 MHz, 2.5 V, 184-pin, double-data-rate (DDR), PC2100 registered,
synchronous dynamic random access memory (SDRAM) dual inline memory
modules (DIMMs). Your memory controller provides Chipkill memory protection if
the DIMMs are 512 MB or larger. Chipkill memory protection is also provided on
servers with 256 MB, 128 Mb technology DIMMs installed. All 128 MB DIMMs or
256 MB, 256 Mb technology DIMMs do not provide Chipkill memory protection.
Chipkill memory protection is a technology that protects the server from a single
chip failure on a DIMM.
Your server supports an optional IBM Remote Supervisor Adapter II. By using the
optional IBM Remote Supervisor Adapter II with the system-management
software that comes with your server, you can manage the functions of the
server locally and remotely giving you a World Wide Web interface to the
system-management functions.
See the documentation that comes with your system-management software for
more information. To order an optional Remote Supervisor Adapter II , contact
your IBM marketing representative or authorized reseller.
Your server comes with an integrated Broadcom Gigabit Ethernet controller on
the system board. This Ethernet controller has an interface for connecting to a
10-Mbps, 100-Mbps, or 1-Gbps network. The server automatically selects
between 10BASE-T and 100/1000BASE-TX environments. The controller
provides full-duplex (FDX) capability, which enables simultaneous transmission
and reception of data on an Ethernet local area network (LAN). This controller
supports Wake on LAN
memory (some models), hot-swappable hard disk

capability.
