The measuring principle

This scale operates according to the B.I.A. principle (bioelectric impedance analysis). This enables the measurement of physical relationships within seconds by means of an unnoticeable and harmless signal from the conductors in the scale. The body fat percentage and other physical relationships in the body can be determined by measuring the electrical resistance (impedance) and calculating constants and individual parameters such as age, height, gender, weight and degree of physical activity.

Muscle tissue and water have good electrical conductivity, and therefore lower resistance. Fatty tissue, on the other hand, has low conductivity as fat cells hold a lower water content than muscles.

Batteries

  • Swallowing batteries and/or battery fluid can be extremely dangerous. Keep the battery and scale out of the reach of children and disabled persons. Should any person swallow a battery and/or battery fluid, please call 911 immediately.
  • Should battery fluid leak and come into contact with your eyes or skin, immediately rinse with plenty of clean water. Please call 911 immediately.
  • Batteries should not be charged or reactivated by any other means.
  • Batteries should not be taken apart, thrown in the fire or short circuited.

  • If a battery has leaked do not touch the battery fluid. Avoid skin contact (e.g. put on protective gloves) and clean the battery compartment with a dry cloth.

NOTICE:

  • Always use the size and type of batteries indicated.
  • Never use rechargeable batteries. This may damage the unit.
  • Replace weak battery before it discharges completely. When "Lo" appears in the display please change the battery.
  • Leaking batteries may damage the device. If you do not intend to use the scale for longer periods, remove the battery from the battery compartment before placing the device in storage.
  • To avoid draining the batteries do not place any items on the scale (Please make sure that there is no weight on the feet of the scale) when not in use.
  • Batteries can contain toxins that are harmful to health and the environment. Always dispose of batteries in accordance with applicable local regulations. Do not dispose of batteries with normal household waste.

If present, remove the battery insulating strip or remove the battery's protective film and insert the battery according to the polarity. If the scale fails to operate, remove the battery completely and insert it again. Replace the battery cover carefully. Your scale is equipped with a "replace battery" indicator. When the scale is operated with a battery that is too weak, "Lo" appears in the display field and the scale automatically switches off. In this case the battery must be replaced (1 x 3 V lithium battery CR2032).

Batteries

New batteries will last for approximately two years if the unit is used three times per day. Trial batteries supplied with the unit may have a shorter life. Remove the batteries if you do not intend to use the unit for a period of three months or longer before placing the device in storage.

Performing the measurement

Note:

The measurement for body fat, body water and muscle percentage may only be carried out when using Tap-On.

  • Tap briefly on the weighing area of your scale.
  • Select the memory preset where your basic personal data are stored by pressing the "up" or "down" buttons repeatedly. The data is displayed consecutively until "0.0" (Fig. 2) appears.
  • Step onto the scale barefoot and make sure you're standing on both conductors. First your body weight is calculated and displayed.
  • Remain on the scale and avoid moving; your body fat is being analyzed. This may take a few seconds.

The following data will be displayed:

  • Body fat percentage BF in % (Fig. 9)
The following data will be displayed Fig. 9
  • Water percentage in % (Fig. 10)
The following data will be displayed Fig. 10
  • Muscle percentage in % (Fig. 11)
The following data will be displayed Fig. 11
  • Weight (lb, kg or st)
  • Now all measured values are displayed consecutively and the scale switches off.

Tips for using the scale

  • Place the scale on a hard, plane level floor (no carpet); a firm floor covering is required for correct measurement.
  • If possible, always weigh yourself at the same time of day (preferably in the morning) striving for comparable conditions such as after using the toilet, on an empty stomach and unclothed, in order to achieve comparable results.
  • Stand still and upright during the measurement.
  • Wait a few hours after unaccustomed physical activity.
  • Wait approx. 15 minutes after getting up in the morning to allow the water in the body to distribute.
  • Remember that only long-term trends are important. Short-term changes in weight within a few days are usually caused by a loss of fluid. Body water plays an important role towards our general well-being.

Important when measuring body fat/body water/muscle percentage:

  • The measurement may only be carried out while barefoot. Dry soles or callused skin can result in unsatisfactory results, as they have insufficient conductivity.
  • Your feet, legs, calves and thighs must not touch each other, as otherwise the measurement cannot be performed correctly.

Limitations

When measuring body fat and other values, deviating and implausible results may occur in:

  • growing children under 10,
  • competitive athletes and body builders,
  • post menopausal women,
  • people with fever, undergoing dialysis treatment or with symptoms of edema or osteoporosis,
  • people taking cardiovascular medication (affecting the heart and vascular system),
  • people taking vascular dilating or vascular constricting medication,
  • people with considerable anatomic deviations of the legs in relation to total height (length of the legs considerably shortened or lengthened),
  • people with prosthetic or one leg,
  • people who suffer from swelling,
  • elderly people,
  • people who drink coffee or alcohol.

Evaluation of results

  • This product does not and is not intended to provide a medical diagnosis. For medical advice please contact a licensed physician. If you have an emergency please call 911 immediately.
  • Consult your physician or healthcare provider before beginning a weight reduction or exercise program.
  • The measurements provided are not substitutes for physician assessments. For medical advice please contact a licensed physician.
  • Please be aware that values obtained from this body analysis scale represent only an approximation of actual analytical medical data. Only a specialist physician can accurately determine body fat, body water and muscle percentage using special medical procedures (e.g. computed tomography).
  • Make sure that you enter the desired unit of mass regarding the weight results.
  • Always consult your physician to determine what will be suitable for you.

Body fat

The following body fat percentages are guide values (contact your physician for further information).

A lower value is often found in athletes. Depending on the type of sports, training intensity and physical constitution, values may result which are below the recommended values stated. It should, however, be noted that there could be a danger to health in the case of extremely low values.

Body water

According to the World Health Organization (WHO 2001), the percentage of body water should normally lie within the following ranges:

Women: 50 – 55 %
Men: 60 – 65 %
Children: 65 –75 %

Body fat contains relatively little water. Therefore people with a high body fat percentage have body water percentages below the recommended values. With endurance athletes, however, the recommended values could be exceeded due to low fat percentages and high muscle percentage. This scale is unsuitable for measuring body water in order to draw medical conclusions concerning agerelated water retention, for example. If necessary ask your physician. Basically, a high body water percentage should be the aim.

Muscle percentage

As the percentage of muscle differs from individual to individual, there are no generally valid guidelines.

Results in relation to time

Note:

Remember that only long-term trends are important. Short-term fluctuations in weight over a few days are usually the result of fluid change, due to fluid intake or loss.

The interpretation of the results will depend on changes in your overall weight and body fat, body water and muscle percentages, as well as on the period during which these changes take place. Sudden changes within days must be distinguished from medium term changes (over weeks) and long term changes (months). A basic rule is that short term changes in weight almost exclusively represent changes in water content, whereas medium and long term changes may also involve the fat and muscle percentages.

  • If your weight reduces over the short term, but your body fat percentage increases or remains the same, you have merely lost water – e.g. after a training session, sauna session or a diet restricted only to rapid weight loss.
  • If your weight increases over the medium term and the body fat percentage falls or stays the same, then you could have built up valuable muscle mass.
  • If your weight and body fat percentage fall simultaneously, then your diet is working – you are losing fat mass.
  • Ideally you should support your diet with physical activity, fitness or power training. This way you can increase your muscle percentage over the medium term.
  • Body fat, body water or muscle percentages should not be added (certain elements of muscle tissue also contain body water).
