Basic procedure for configuring your lan

The physical address is the MAC address (Go to Glossary).

Note the IP address of the target PC you want to check
connectivity between and type "ping <ip address of the other
PC>"
Example: ping 192.168.0.127
If you obtain an answer, this it means that the 2 computers can
see each other and communicate.
If a request timeout occurs, you will need to change your LAN
configuration.
To change your LAN configuration:

First, try to place the 2 PCs on the same sub-network.
If you are allowed to change the network settings yourself, go
TCP/IP properties
to

Enter the following settings for the PCs:
PC 1:
IP address: 192.168.1.1
Sub net mask: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 192.168.1.1
Preferred DNS: 192.168.1.1
PC 2:
IP address: 192.168.1.2
Sub net mask: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 192.168.1.2
Preferred DNS: 192.168.1.2

Validate the change and restart both PCs, if prompted to do so
by your OS.

On PC 1, run COMMAND or CMD, and type PING
192.168.1.2.
If it still fails, check the cables between the 2 PCs and your
network adapter hardware.
Regarding the cable connection between the 2 PCs, if
connected through a hub or a switch (necessary if you have
more than 2 PCs on the network) a green light will be activated
when the connection works on their port.
On the network adapter hardware side, some lights will
become brighter and/or blink when the network link is running.
