TROUBLESHOOTING

ENGINE PROBLEMS
Engine Will Not Start
1.
Check control positions.
2.
Check fuel.
3.
Remove and inspect
spark plug.
4.
Take mower to an
authorized Honda
servicing dealer, or
refer to shop manual.
Loss of Power
1.
Check throttle position.
2.
Check grass height.
Check under cutter
3.
housing.
4.
Check air filter.

Check fuel.

servicing dealer, or refer
to shop manual.

Possible Cause
Fuel valve OFF.
Throttle lever in wrong
position.
Out of fuel.
Bad fuel; mower stored
without treating or
draining gasoline, or
refueled with bad
gasoline.
Spark plug faulty,
fouled, or improperly
gapped.
Spark plug wet with
fuel (flooded engine).
Fuel filter clogged,
carburetor malfunction,
ignition malfunction,
valves stuck, etc.
Possible Cause
Throttle not set to HIGH.
Grass too tall to cut.
Cutter housing clogged.
Air filter clogged.
Bad fuel; mower stored
without treating or
draining gasoline, or
refueled with bad
gasoline.
Fuel filter clogged,
carburetor malfunction,
ignition malfunction,
valves stuck, etc.
Correction
Turn fuel valve ON
(p. 27).
Move throttle lever
to CHOKE position,
unless the engine is
warm (p. 28).
Refuel (p. 23).
Drain fuel tank and
carburetor (p. 44).
Refuel with fresh
gasoline (p. 23).
Clean, adjust or
replace spark plug
(p. 53).
Dry and reinstall
spark plug. Start
engine with throttle
lever in HIGH
position.
Replace or repair
faulty components as
necessary.
Correction
Move throttle to
HIGH (p. 28).
Raise cutting height
(p. 26), cut narrower
swath (p. 38), or cut
more frequently.
Clean out cutter
housing (p. 42).
Clean or replace air
filter (p. 52).
Drain fuel tank and
carburetor (p. 44).
Refuel with fresh
gasoline (p. 23).
Replace or repair
faulty components as
necessary.
