6.3 PostScript3 Roman Fonts

The font is roughly divided into two types: Bitmap Font and Scalable Font (Outline Font).

6.3.1 PreScanned Bitmap Fonts

(1) With PreScanned Bitmap fonts, the size of fonts that are frequently used in general
documents is rasterized in advance and stored in the ROM; in this way, rasterization
within a job can be skipped for faster page generation.
(2) This mechanism used to be applied in the days of PS Level 1 when the CPU processing
speed was not fast.
(3) This device does not support this type of fonts.

6.3.2 Type-1 Scalable Fonts

(1) Scalable Font is a result of digitizing the coordinate positions of the outline of a character image
based on a certain mathematical formula. A character image is generated by converting a scalable
font to a bit-mapped pattern by the dedicated rasterizer before printing.
(2) The Type-1 font is a program that is described in the dedicated Interpreter language
called Type1 CharString, not a data array.
(3) There are several types of mathematical formula, and the Type-1 font uses Bezier
curves of third order.
(4) Rasterization requires a longer processing time; thus, the characters converted to bit-mapped
patterns are registered in the Cache memory.

6.3.3 Type-42 Scalable Fonts

Since PostScript Interpreter supports TrueType fonts, Type-42 fonts are supported. TrueType
fonts that the user has used in the document are converted to Type-42 fonts by the host-side printer
driver and then sent to the printer, whereby TrueType fonts are supported.

6.3.4 Type-3 Scalable Fonts

Type-3 Fonts were used in the earlier PostScript printer models but this printer does not have them
as resident fonts. When the user uses a font that the printer does not have, the host-side printer
driver downloads it as a Type-3 font to the printer.
This device supports Type-3 Fonts.

6.3.5 Raterizer

The rasterizer is a module that reads scalable font data and generates a bit-mapped pattern or
outline information according to the parameters such as scaling rates, rotational angles, etc.

6.3.6 Font Cache

Bit-mapped patterns, generated by the rasterizer, are registered in the cache, and when the same
character of the same attributes is used next time, its corresponding bit-mapped pattern is copied
from the cache without using the raterizer.
It not only registers scalable fonts but also stores the bitmap fonts that are modified, for example,
rotated.

6.3.7 Resident European Scalable Fonts

This device's PS European resident fonts are those 136 fonts listed in the table below. .
