List of Error Symptoms

NOTE: To diagnose a problem, first find the error symptom in the left column. If directed to a check procedure,
replace the FRU indicated in the check procedure. If no check procedure is indicated, the first Action/
FRU listed in the right column is the most likely cause.
Error Symptom
NOTE: Ensure that the memory modules are installed properly and that the contact leads are clean before
diagnosing any system problems.
System fails to enter power saving mode when the
Power Management Mode is set to Enabled and the
power saving timer set in BIOS has elapsed.
System hangs before system boot.
System hangs after system boot.
Blinking cursor only; system does not work.
NOTE: The processor fan runs while the system operates.
NOTE: The processor clock should be correctly set to match its speed requirement before diagnosing any
processor problems.
Processor fan does not run but power supply fan runs.
Processor test failed.
NOTE: Ensure that the memory modules are installed properly and that the contact leads are clean before
diagnosing any system problems.

System / Power-saving functions
1. Non-PnP/ACPI compatible operating system (e.g., DOS,
Windows 95): Enter the BIOS Setup to enable the power
saving mode and set the proper timing requirement.
ACPI compatible operating system (e.g., Windows 98):
Enable the power saving mode and set the proper timing
requirements in the Power Management Properties of the
Control Panel.
2. Reload the software from the Recovery CD.

1. Execute a system test and set it to "Halt on Error" to see the
potential cause of the problem.

Processor / Processor fan
1. Ensure that the system is not in power saving mode. See

2. With the system power on, measure the voltage of the
processor fan connector. Its reading should be +12Vdc.
3. Main board.
1. Make sure that the jumper setting for the processor
frequency and voltage is correct.
2. Check the processor frequency settings in CMOS/ BIOS
setup.
3. Make sure that the processor is inserted on the CPU slot
correctly; reinsert the processor
4. Replace the processor.
5. Replace the main board.
