Replacing the Traction Belt

1. Disengage the PTO, turn the ignition key to off, and
remove the key.
2. Wait for all moving parts to stop before leaving the
operating position and then chock or block tires.
3. Raise the rear of the machine and hold with jack stands.
4. Remove mower belt (Fig. 48).
5. Loosen pivot bolt enough to slide idler pulley in slot
and remove traction belt from the engine and drive
pulleys.
6. Install new belt around engine and drive pulleys
(Fig. 47).
7. Slide idler pulley in engine frame to tension traction
belt (Fig. 47).
8. Install the mower belt (Fig. 48).
9. Check the belt guide under the engine frame for proper
adjustment (Fig. 47). The distance between the belt
guide and mower belt should be 1-3/8 inch (35mm).
Adjust as necessary. The disengaged belt should not
drag or fall off pulley when guides are properly
adjusted.

Replacing the Mower Belt

1. Disengage the PTO, turn the ignition key to off, and
remove the key.
2. Wait for all moving parts to stop before leaving the
operating position and then chock or block tires.
3. Remove the knobs and belt cover on mower.
4. Remove idler pulley and then remove worn belt
(Fig. 48).
5. Install the new belt.
6. Install the idler pulley.
7. Engage PTO and check belt tension. See Adjusting
Mower Belt Tension, page 36.
Note: Proper belt tension is 10–15 lbf. (44–67 N) with the
belt deflected a 1/2 inch (13mm) halfway between pulleys
(Fig. 48).
