PREVENTIVE
MAINTENANCE
INTERVALS
The following is intended as a
guide for establishing preventive
maintenance intervals. The
recommendations given should
be followed as closely as possible
to obtain long life and optimum
performance from your engine.
Maintenance intervals indicated are
time (hours) of actual operation.
The intervals shown apply only to
the maintenance functions described
and should be coordinated with other
regularly scheduled maintenance.
The "Daily" instructions apply to
routine or daily starting of the engine.
They do not apply to a new engine
or one that has been operated for a
considerable period of time.
For new or stored engines, refer
to Section 13.1, "Preparations for
Starting the Engine the First Time," in
the Series 50 Service Manual (6SE50).
Preventive maintenance other than the
"Daily" checks should be performed
by authorized Detroit Diesel service
outlets. These outlets have the trained
personnel and special tools to properly
perform all services.
All information subject to change without notice. (Rev. 01/ 04)

Item 1 – Lubricating Oil
Check the oil level daily with the
engine stopped. If the engine has
just been stopped and is warm, wait
approximately 20 minutes to allow the
oil to drain back into the oil pan before
checking. Add the proper grade of oil
to maintain the correct level on the
dipstick. See Figure 10.

NOTICE:
When adding lubricating oil, do
not overfill. Oil may be blown out
through the crankcase breather if
the crankcase is overfilled.
