Charge Indicator Lamp
Should the charge indicator lamp
fail to come on prior to starting
when the key is in steering lock
position 2 or should it fail to go out
after starting or during operation,
this indicates a m alfunction which
must be repaired im m ediately at an
authorized M ercedes-Benz dealer.
If the charge indicator lamp com es
on, or a loss of power steering
assistance is noticable while the
engine is running, this may indicate
that one of the two poly-V-belts has
broken. Should this condition
occur, the poly-V-belt must be
replaced before continuing to
operate the vehicle. O therwise, the
engine may overheat due to an
inoperative w ater pump which may
result in dam age to the engine.
Do not continue to drive the vehicle
with the charge indicator lamp
illuminated. Doing so could result
in serious engine dam age that is
not covered by the M ercedes-Benz
Limited W arranty.
Low Engine Oil Level W arning
W ith the key in steering lock
position 2, the oil level warning
lamp com es on. It should go out
im m ediately w hen the engine is
running.
If the warning lam p does not go out
after starting the engine, or com es
on with the engine running and at
operating tem perature, the engine
oil level has dropped to approxi
m ately the m inim um mark on the
dipstick.
When this occurs, the warning
lamp will first com e on interm it
tently and then stay on if the oil
level drops further.
If no oil leaks are noted, continue
to drive to the nearest service
station w here the engine oil should
be topped to the "full" m ark on the
dipstick with an approved oil.
The low engine oil level warning
light should not be ignored.
Extended driving with the light
illum inated could result in serious
engine dam age that is not covered
by the M ercedes-Benz Limited
W arranty.
In addition to the warning lamp, the
engine oil level should be
periodically checked with the
dipstick, for exam ple during a fuel
stop, or before a long trip (see
Index).
Engine Oil C onsum ption
Engine oil consum ption checks
should only be made after the
break-in period. During the break-
in period, higher oil consum ption
m ay be noticed and is normal.
Frequent driving at high engine
speeds results in increased
consum ption.
