Brake Pad Wear Indicator Lamp

The brake pad wear indicator lamp in
the instrument cluster comes on when
the key is turned to steering lock posi
tion 2 and it should go out when the
engine is running. If the indicator lamp
lights up during braking, this shows
that the front wheel brake pads are
worn.
Have the brake system checked at
your authorized MERCEDES-BENZ
dealer as soon as possible.

Brake Warning Lamp

The brake warning lamp will come on
if insufficient brake fluid is in the reser
voir (key in steering lock position 2
and parking brake released).
When the minimum mark on the reser
voir is reached, have the brake system
checked for brake pad thickness and
leaks.
To test the brake warning lamp, turn
key in steering lock to position 2. The
brake warning lamp comes on, and
should go out when the engine is
running.

Charge Indicator Lamp

Should the charge indicator lamp fail
to come on prior to starting when the
key is in steering lock position 2 or
should it fail to go out after starting or
during operation, this indicates a fault
which must be repaired at an author
ized MERCEDES-BENZ dealer as
soon as possible.
If the charge indicator lamp comes on
while the engine is running, this may
indicate that the poly-V-belt has bro
ken. Should this condition occur, the
poly-V-belt must be replaced before
continuing to operate the vehicle.
Otherwise, the engine will overheat
due to an inoperative water pump
which may result in damage to the
engine.

Oil Pressure Gauge

The oil pressure at idle speed may
drop to 0.3 bar (4.4 psi) if the engine is
at operating temperature. This will not
jeopardize its operational reliability.
Pressure must, however, rise imme
diately upon acceleration.

Low Engine Oil Level Indicator

Lamp

The indicator lamp comes on with the
key in steering lock position 2 and
should go out when the engine is
running.
If the indicator lamp comes on with the
engine running and at operating tem
perature, the engine oil level has drop
ped to approximately the minimum
mark on the dipstick. When this oc
curs, the indicator lamp will first come
on intermittently and then stay on if
the oil level drops further. If no oil
leaks are noted and there is no loss in
engine oil pressure, continue to drive
to the nearest service station where
the engine oil should be topped to the
"full" mark of the dipstick (see
page 74).
In addition to the indicator lamp, the
engine oil level should be periodically
checked with the dipstick, for example
during a fuel stop, or before a long trip
(see page 74).

Engine Oil Consumption

Engine oil consumption can only be
determined after a certain mileage has
been covered. During the break-in
period, higher oil consumption may be
noticed and is normal.
