This Quick Start is for your Zoom USB Cat M1 / CAT NB1 cellular modem.
This product has been certified for use on AT&T, Verizon, and other cell
networks. This Quick Start describes how to plug a micro SIM card into
the SIM slot of the modem, connect the antenna, power up the modem,
and then send commands through the USB port of a Windows or Linux
computer to connect to the Internet. More information, including

  • Page 2 Powering Your USB Modem Your modem is designed to use the power supplied by your USB port. In some 2G modes, your modem may draw up to 600 mA. In Cat M1 or CAT NB1 mode your modem may draw up to 240 mA. if your USB port is not capable of supplying the current you require, you may use the supplemental Micro USB port on the side of the unit for power or you may reduce the transmitted power using commands to the modem.

  • Page 4 Plugging a Micro SIM into the Micro SIM Slot of the Modem In order to use your modem, you need a compatible 3GFF SIM card, which is also called a micro SIM card. You can use a SIM card for Cat M1 and/or Cat NB1 services from AT&T, Verizon and many other service providers.

    If your USB modem is in a case, remove the screw used to secure the SIM cover and slide the cover off in the direction of the arrows. Plug in a 3FF micro SIM at the location shown in Figure 1. If you removed the SIM cover in step 1, slide the cover back in place, and then screw the cover down.

    Using the Modem We’ve included examples of setting up your modem with Windows and with Raspberry Pi / Linux computers. If you want to install your modem with a Raspberry Pi or Linux computer, please skip ahead to Installing your Modem for Raspberry Pi or Linux. If you want to set up your modem on a Windows computer, continue below.
  • Page 7 Installing Your Modem on a Windows Computer Download the drivers for your modem from http://www.zoomtel.com/4650support . Double click setup.exe to install the drivers. If the Windows User Control dialog box appears, click Yes, and then follow the prompts to install the drivers onto your computer. Plug your modem into an available USB port on your computer.
  • Page 8 Plug your modem into an available USB port. Raspberry Pi users may need to use a USB extender cable to allow access to the other USB ports. Zoom USB extension adapter Model 98240 can be purchased from some online retailers.

  • Page 14 Troubleshooting your Internet Connection This section will walk you through some troubleshooting steps if your USB modem did not connect to the Internet. If you do not already have a terminal program installed, you will need to install a terminal program to talk to your modem.

  • Page 16 Step 2: Check that your APN is configured correctly. Enter the command AT+QCFG=”apn/display”,1 to enable displaying the APN, then enter AT+CGDCONT? to display the APN. A typical response for the APN would be: CGDCONT=1, “IPV4V6”, “apn name”, 0 , where apn name is the name of the apn supplied by your provider.
