Operation

The TYCO DV-5
Valve is a diaphragm
a
style valve that depends upon water
pressure in the Diaphragm Chamber
(Ref. Figure 2A) to hold the Diaphragm
closed against the water supply
pressure.
When the DV-5
Valve is set for service,
a
the Diaphragm Chamber is pressurized
through the trim connections from the
inlet side of the system's main control
valve.
Opening an actuation device (solenoid
valve or dry pilot actuator) trips the
Model MRA-1 Manual Reset Actuator.
Tripping the MRA-1 releases water from
the DV-5
Diaphragm Chamber faster
a
than it can be replenished through the
1/8 in. (3,2 mm) restriction located in
the diaphragm chamber supply con-
nection. Release of water through the
MRA-1 results in a rapid pressure drop
in the DV-5
Diaphragm Chamber. The
a
force differential applied through the
Diaphragm to hold the Diaphragm in
the set position is reduced below the
valve trip point. The water supply pres-
sure then forces the Diaphragm open
permitting water to flow into the system
piping, as well as through the Alarm

Port to actuate the system alarms (Ref.
Figure 2B).
In normal operation, the system air
pressure is monitored by a Super-
visory Low Pressure Alarm Switch.
Should damage occur to a sprinkler or
the system piping, loss of air pressure
will not result in opening of the DV-5
Valve and flooding of the system with
resulting inadvertent water discharge.
Loss of system air pressure will only
result in a low air alarm so that repairs
to the system can be facilitated to avoid
unnecessary water damage should the
system be activated in the event of a
fire.
However, in the event of a fire, opera-
tion of an electrical detection device
such as a heat-sensitive thermostat
or smoke detector signals the deluge
valve releasing panel to energize the
normally closed Solenoid Valve. In
turn, the energized Solenoid Valve
opens to release water from the Dia-
phragm Chamber faster than it can be
replenished through the restriction pro-
vided in the diaphragm supply connec-
tion. This release of water results in a
rapid pressure drop in the Diaphragm
Chamber to below the valve trip point.
The water supply pressure then forces
the Diaphragm open, permitting water

to flow into the system piping, as well
as through the Alarm Port to actuate
the system alarms.
In the event of a fault detection in the
fire detection system, the system con-
verts to operate as an ordinary dry pipe
system, which means the energized-to-
close Solenoid Valve in the actuation
a
loop becomes de-energized and open
to communicate any system air pres-
sure loss to the DP-1 Dry Pilot Actu-
ator. As soon as a sprinkler operates/
activates, the subsequent drop in air
pressure opens the Dry Pilot Actuator.
Water from the diaphragm pressure
piping will exit the Dry Pilot Actuator
through this drain, resulting in the acti-
vation of the DV-5
Deluge Valve.
a
Upon opening of the DV-5
whether by Solenoid Valve or Dry Pilot
Actuator, the Model MRA-1 Manual
Reset Actuator (Ref. TFP1387) opens
to constantly vent the DV-5
phragm Chamber to hydraulically latch
the DV-5
in the tripped position until
